Title: Think I fried my GX4000
Post by: VanZan on 15:15, 07 October 24
I went back to it for the first time in a while today. Someone in the room distracted me and I put the newer 9v adapter into the 5v socket. :picard: :picard2:

I suppose it's trashed? :( When I turn it on I get a black square with a pink border.

Would the other stuff be alright? Like the game, gamepads, psu and scart cable? Will they be damaged too?

I'm an idiot. Should have just covered the 5v socket. Suicidal right now.

Does it play any music if a game is running?

Bryce.

I had this happen on one of my GX machines... Turned out the RAM was fried, but that was my own case. Thankfully the chips were easy enough to source at the time (few years ago)
Let Bryce diagnose it though.

The only game I have is this:

and like I said, ominously, all I get is a black square with a pink border. Maybe the game got damaged too? If that's even possible.

Yeah I think the RAM might be fried too....which is better than it being a total write off I think.

I would replace the RAM.

On a normal CPC a square with border is a typical sign of a RAM fault: The CPC boots from ROM and initializes the CRTC - but as soon as it accesses the RAM it freezes.  I guess on the GX4000 (depending on the cartridge) it could be similar. It's also at least a good sign that some basic functionality is still working as it seems to read from cartridge and initializes the ASIC/CRTC.
