Title: X-MEM and SF2
Post by: Munchausen on 10:14, 13 October 14
I've got a symbiface 2 and a LowerROM from Bryce.

I'd like to be able to re-program the LowerROM, which means I'd need an XMEM (ROM only), but I don't want to lose the RTC, mouse interface, IDE or RAM of the SF2, so I'd like to connect them at the same time.

This seems ok on the face of it, because on the SF2 you can disable the ROMs for reading, but I think that write mode is always enabled which would make writing to ROMs a problem. So my question is, is there some way I can disable the SF2 ROMs (with a switch or something) so that I can connect both the SF2 and the XMEM at the same time, and have a reprogrammable Lower ROM?

The way how SF2 roms are written is completely different compared to the Flash-based Rom expansions like the X-Mem. So I don't see a problem when speaking about writing to Roms. The problem should be the Ram. You will probably need to deactivate it on one of the two expansions, but I have no idea how this can be done. Or maybe it even works with both activates, as everything will be mirrored?

That's great! What about ROM software that detects what ROM board you have though (ROMAN/ROManager)? Perhaps @TFM (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=179) could help with that?

For the RAM issue, you can buy a version of the XMEM that has no RAM, only ROM, so that is not actually a problem (and also save some money) :D See here: X-MEM MX4 Board - Cent Pour Cent (http://www.centpourcent.net/store/p55/X-MEM_MX4_Board.html)

(It would be great if you could make the extra RAM available too... so if you use both you can have 1 meg of RAM... but I think that requires a lot of work)

For ROM programming there is no problem :-)

However it would be more easy to get an new EPROM for the LowerROM to have new firmware.

About the RAM I will PM you...

Well, you actually don't need a ROM in your cartridge, no? Well, yes, if you have the great X-MEM from Tot0  :) :) :)
