The first football game I played on the CPC on my friends 464 (he had it on They Sold A Million 2). I later acquired it on budget by which time it already felt dated.

Good for the era but quickly bettered. Certainly more fun with 2 players as well as the AI is pretty poor.

Never played this one. I played Matchday 2 which wasn't bad, although it was a little too slow. Your version looks even worse to play albeit more colourful.

Matchday 2 was quite enjoyable (i still play it to this day), but Matchday was horrible...

I like the graphics though.  For 1985 they do have a nice clean, cartoony, colourful charm to them (that was too many c-words).  The sequel is a better game but I don't like the graphics as much (especially the heads which despite being in Mode 1 don't seem anywhere near as well defined and readable)
Favorite CPC games: Count Duckula 3, Oh Mummy Returns, RoboCop Resurrection, Tankbusters Afterlife

Problem is the slow speed and the sprite overlap issues.

No idea why it ended up being the shape of an American football. Just like I can't think of an explanation for the sprite overlap issues other than 'couldn't be bothered'.

Probably to gain speed.

correct. The sprites are drawn using XOR.

No idea about the ball.

It uses the firmware for the menu.

Goodness me, imagine how slow it must have been before they did that!

Using XOR sprites is also easier in pseudo 3D, because you don't actually need to worry about depth handling - the results will be the same regardless of draw order.

I had Match Day on the speccy when it came out and loved it at the time, although it was absolutely rock hard. I think I only ever once actually scored a goal and considered that victory, despite the match ending up something like 39-1!

It really hasn't dated well though, so many titles have come and gone since that just did it all a lot better.

I actually had a lot of fun with this one. It came as part of the They Sold A Million II compilation (along with Bruce Lee, Knight lore and Match Point).
This was actually a lot of fun against another player, despite it's gaudy graphics. Against a computer it was pointless.

Didn't enjoy MDII as much as this one.
Currently playing on: 2xCPC464, 1xCPC6128, 1x464Plus, 1x6128Plus, 2xGX4000. M4 board, ZMem 1MB and still forever playing Bruce Lee.
No cheats, snapshots or emulation. I play my games as they're intended to be played. What about you?

Match Day I was not bad for its time, but thankfully I went straight to II, which I really enjoyed back in the day. I have very fond memories of doing championships with friends during a birthday of mine... :)
