Well in the 'explanation' video (second one down) he shows loading the software and making a 'groove' using the AY chip, so I guess it's a kind of chip-tuning.

Impressed how nice the AY sounds coming out of that big speaker, not so mierd[nb]Funny how Spanish and Frenchies have the same sounding word for this![/nb] after all

I think we need a separate video showing off the crazy and different uses for the Amstrad, this probably needs a different topic. I remember Amstrad Action asking people to write in with their unusual stories so there must be some about.

I think there was a similar topic on the CPC Zone forums (RIP), I think someone came up with pics of some Greek or Italian car garage still using a 6128 to do car tests or something!

Mmmh... "Chiptunes" may mean to do tunes with chips...
As he uses a CPC to actually produce music...

But yeah most of time we talk about chiptune concerning the musics of video games in the past (when you directly used the chip of the computer...
Nowadays Games music is done in normal studio and simply played through media reader... just like reading a CD.

At the time you had to programm the chip and computer to get it play anything and trick a lot to get effects.

Of course Borbones is more into classic Rock/Punk Noisy music...
But still use circuit bending and kustomised old school computer.

When someone do music with a Gameboy nowadays, it is called Chiptune...
so doing music with an amstrad (even if you play other instrument alongside) could be considered "Half chiptune" or "mixed chiptune" perhaps...

But yeah, not exactly chiptune, yet somewhat related.
When the AY Riderz play HungUp from Madonna with ZX speccies...
HungUp is not a Chiptune...
But because it is done using Speccies, it is now.

also when a classical orchestra plays SuperMario or a Rock band plays Deflektor... It is no more chiptune but rock music...

To me chiptune is stuff played on good old Machines with old generation chips...

the "Boite de merde" or merdophone" (in french...) is also somewhat related to the Category:Robotic.
I mean he use the CPC to activate motors and real drums... and light effects.

I know automatons are not really robots, but you get my point (Robotic sounds more fun...)

Yes you should open a new topic, would be interesting to get this kind of debate and also get a lot of videos and links on the matter.

Trackers - for sure. Emulated chips on VSTs - well, I guess that yes. After all, it's like composing classical music on a PC: you're not using the original instruments, but it can still be a symphony.

Judging from the instrumention around the CPC, I would guess that it had an RS232 interface attached and the CPC was being used as a Datalogger.

I always wondered why you would get a 6128 with a green screen. But for business or applications like this it makes perfect sense. Guess that's what Sugar thought too when he made the PCW

It would also play some fine timFolin stuff perhaps... while it extract the Fresh beer from a fridge... (you uncap it just by taking it...)

Of course it manage your consumption and stocks, calculates the Alcohol in your blood and so on...

He said it right there - it's used to diagnose (ancient, probably) cars, by pulling the CPU data. Every good mechanic has one, though how you'd interpret anything but the most rudimentary cars/data formats with a CPC is beyond me. Then again I'm no mechanic - maybe the formats are available out there. I know that Bosch does diagnostics machines that are used for different brands...

I think it's still pretty basic at most levels with cars.

I have a fairly modern car that I bought second hand. When I took it for a service they told me it had been 'chipped' (i.e. the stock chip replaced with one for better performance etc) and they asked if I wanted it 'reset'. I then came home and looked online and found to my amazement that it was only a 16kb EPROM and even more amazing was companies were charging around £300 to chip your car... all you need is the ROM image, an EPROM blower and a bit of time to put it in, so a CPC could be used for this.

Yeah, but then again you also pay for the expertise - someone created the settings set, and maybe this needs lots of equipment (to run tests etc), so that's where the cost may lie. Like with drugs, it's not the pill you're paying for, it's the R&D.

That said, are there ROM data you can program onto an EPROM out there?

I think that if I were a car company I'd use something more custom than a simple 16kB EPROM...
