Hi all, well I didn't think it would be too long after my SGT review on the ZX Spectrum of ESWAT that someone would request me do the CPC version and low and behold a tuber came forward and paid requested it.

I've shown both versions,...what on EARTH was the point of doing that 64k version?! God almighty! :picard:

What are your feelings about this beauty (cough cough) from that delightful software house U.S. Gold (Yes I'm being sarcastic).

SGT Review, ESWAT:

sigh

OOf!

Still - I would rather play this than Green Beret.

I rememeber this when it came out. Wasn't the 128k version severely bugged in later levels though? I seem to recall graphics corruption Rastan style.

The 64k version wasnt the Amstrad's finest hour, but it's nowhere near the worst game out there. The tiny playing area is probably the most off putting part of the game in my honest opinion.

Also still maintain that Green Beret wasn't that bad. I could live with the lack of scrolling (worked for Regenade and Gryzor but nobody bitches about it in those games), but the collision detection left very little to be desired.
Currently playing on: 2xCPC464, 1xCPC6128, 1x464Plus, 1x6128Plus, 2xGX4000. M4 board, ZMem 1MB and still forever playing Bruce Lee.
No cheats, snapshots or emulation. I play my games as they're intended to be played. What about you?

Gryzor

I actually think this is better than Green Beret, although I really liked GB on other platforms...

Very strange where the 64k version is squished to be half the height. Still, eh it plays ok enough. Kinda. I always felt even the arcade game was very much like RoboCop but not as good.  The Master System version is probably my least fave. It's kind of annoying enemies seem to just keep spawning from what I recall.
Favorite CPC games: Count Duckula 3, Oh Mummy Returns, RoboCop Resurrection, Tankbusters Afterlife

Fun fact: I really liked Green Beret. Today I see the problems, but as a kid, I thought it was a great game.

Has anyone ever looked into Green Beret, if this is hard- or software scrolling? Would it be possible to patch it to become more like Ghosts'n Goblins scrolling? Also not great but at least the gameplay won't pause any more.

I liked Green Beret as well. In fact, I only managed to finish it for the first time a couple of years ago. The bug on the end of level 3 where if you miss the helicopters with your rockets and nobody came along to kill to top up your weapons was annoying though! Meant that you need to be precise with your shots and make sure you didn't miss, otherwise it was get killed and do it again.

Isn't the scrolling pretty much the same for both GB and GNG though? Only the latter was faster.

GNG won't pause, thus not interrupting the gameplay.

But it seems to be similar. That's why I was asking if it's also hardware scrolling and if maybe that can be patched to work in a similar way like GNG where I think it works OK.

I thought Elite GNG's did Pause, but the scroll was so fast that it wasn't noticable.
Although to be fair, as I mentioned earlier in the thread. The collision detection with the knife kills is so bad, I'd fix that first because if it didn't pause for that second between screens, the game really would be unplayable as you don't know if your knife shot actually will kill someone, or worse, what the hell you're jumping into!
