Shall we split the Mainboard Versions page?

I've noticed that it's getting quite a pain to navigate that page due to all the images, so my question is if we shall split the page into several to reduce the image load.

Have a nice day!

I think it is good to see pages with a lot of detail in them as many pages contain very little information.

Having all the thumbnails on the same page makes it easier to compare different versions, however, I noticed that some pictures do not appear, there is a .jpg title but no thumbnail, is that because the page is too big?, or a simple error in the page?

One question that the page does not answer is do the different sizes of CPC464 board fit in the original case or was the case changed to line up with the new connector port positions, I think a smaller board would not fit unless the case was modified, but I don't know that for a fact.

Indeed, but you'll not be comparing a 664 board with a gx4000 board. The idea would be to have different pages for the 464, 664 and 6128. Then one for the Plus range as there are not that many boards.

Maybe it would be a cool idea to assemble an image with a board of each type to have a visual size comparison.

If I remember correctly, there are different lower cases depending on the board type, but that should be easy to spot because of the holes on the PCB's.

I think that what may be happening is that the server is not generating or caching the thumbnails, and as such, it's sending the big images every time you enter the page. Gryzor or Markus, would you be so kind of taking a look at it?

It's a good idea, and since I was browsing the page the other day (I came across a variant not documented!) I see the problem, but how could it be split really? :(

Steve, the images are all there; since they're pretty big, my guess is that the connection for some of them times out while the browser is loading the rest of them - after all, a browser can only have a specific amount of connections open at a time (in Opera you can set that limit manually). Try right-clicking on the missing ones and -if your browser allows it- reload them manually.

Also, I think the connectors were at the same positions...

[Edit] actually the page has a small problem that causes quite some trouble: instead of calling thumbnails through the "|thumb" switch it calls the full image but rescales it. If you click on any thumbnail and check its properties you'll see it's the full image...

robcfg

If the thumbnail error can be fixed, then there's no need to split the page (I like it the way it is now), but due to the thumbnail thingie it's pretty hard to navigate.

Gryzor

Hmmm I got to freshen up my knowledge on mediawiki image use...

robcfg

I think it's something related to the movement to the new server, because the page hasn't changed and it worked well before the move.

Gryzor

Seems some thumbs are missing, but this is not due to the server move - they're not to be found even in my old server backup. Hm...

I have compared 464 with 664 and 6128 to see the differences, also the plus boards, so if you do a comparison page, would you please include all models so I and others are able to see differences between models.

Bryce

Splitting that page is easy: The page is called "Mainboard Versions" so why are all those cartridge PCBs there? Shouldn't they be on a Cartridge page? The same with DDI-1 (not a mainboard). I know it's not all that much, but it might make a difference to the load speeds.

Bryce.

robcfg

Well, it's really the big PCB images what it's hurting the performance, but as Gryzor pointed, it has to do with the thumbnail mechanism.

I suggest we wait until this issue can be fixed and then, maybe, put the peripheral and cartridge PCB's in another page.

Deal or no deal? (I love that show  ;D )

DEAL!!! ;) I could not resist  ;D

By the way, the new Aleste motherboard pictures are FANTASTIC!!!  :D ... I love the CPC Clones, the KC Compact is so lovely with all its russian chips xDDDD

robcfg

As soon as we can convince Deepfb, I'll be scanning his KC compact board too  ;D

It's not that you have to convince me, is that you -and me- are in too many things :-P
I have spent all the morning sorting and cataloguing last cpcmaniaco's adquisitions. And the job is not finished yet!

Gryzor

Hey guys, can you visit the mainboards page (http://cpcwiki.eu/index.php/Mainboard_Versions) and tell me if you see any performance difference? We did do something but I'm not sure if it's my new VGA or it really worked...

steve

That's better, all the pictures are fully displayed where previously it would take many seconds for the thumbnails to work their way down the page.
There are a few empty squares, should these have pictures or are you still waiting for pictures of these items?.

Gryzor

Hmmm lemme check... no, I think that these are just missing - i.e. were never uploaded, because the code doesn't even mention them.

Thanks to Andreas for accommodating our software needs :)

robcfg

Now it works great!

Before, you couldn't even scroll the page properly.

Thanks a bunch!

Gryzor

Glad to hear it's working! See, new server's paying off :)

Just wanted to say: I forced the system to recreate all thumbnails. This may have fixed the problems reported a long time ago about gifs not appearing right (but can't track which ones these were or where...).

Also, currently there are a few niggles; on the mainboard page you'll see that a few thumbs have failed to be generated, working on it...

robcfg

Only a small detail...  ;D

I just saw that the thumbnails for the Z70200, MC0002B board doesn't appear, and instead, the following error is shown:

Quote
Error creating thumbnail: convert: Insufficient memory (case 4) `/var/www/vhosts/cpcwiki.eu/httpdocs/imgs/5/52/CPC464_PCB_Top_(Z70200_MC0002B).jpg'.
convert: missing an image filename `/var/www/vhosts/cpcwiki.eu/httpdocs/imgs/thumb/5/52/CPC464_PCB_Top_(Z70200_MC0002B).jpg/200px-CPC464_PCB_Top_(Z70200_MC0002B).jpg

Gryzor

Yes, as I said above, "on the mainboard page you'll see that a few thumbs have failed to be generated, working on it..." :)

SyX

It works great!!! The motherboard page loads very fast and scroll smooth!!! :D

Bryce

Gryzor

Yeah, this started yesterday, might be something in the system variables, since Andreas and me are looking into it... It's a different error than before. Also appears when you up a pic. Thanks for letting me know!
