Hi all
not sure if this is the right place to post, but here goes!
i just got a pang eprom from ebay, with the intention of putting it in a spare burning rubber cart, but when i opened the cart the eprom inside is soldered in.

is there an easy way of putting the pang eprom onto the board as i do not have soldering skills!

many thanks ???

Bryce

If you don't want/need the burning rubber EPROM, then I'd recommend removing it and soldering a socket in its place. That way you won't destroy the Pang EPROM. The guide here: IC Repair - CPCWiki will give you some tips on how to safely remove the old EPROM, but you will still need to be careful, because too much heat could destroy the ACID IC. If your soldering skills are zero and you don't think you can manage this. Through it all in an envelope and send it over.

Unfortunately the PCB won't fit in the cartridge case with an EPROM in a socket. If you want to still have a casing, then you've no choice but to solder the new EPROM in.

I am bit confused as to why you bought a rom.... all plus games should be on cart.

Hi

my soldering skills are zero!

i thought it would be easy to do!

if you would be able to do it for me that would be great!

how much do you charge and what do you need me to send to you?
;D

Bryce

Send me a PM and tell me exactly what you want.

Why cannibalize a cartridge when you can make a sandwich...

MITM - CPCWiki

the MITM solution may be good, the only problem is that those cartridge connectors (36 pins ?) are hard to find...

or else, replace the Burning rubber with a sochet, perhaps a few jumpers for the LKs too...

Anyway you can find fucktons of video on how to desolder at youtube.

the hardwest thing is to unsolder the chip while not destroying them by overheat.

there is what looks like a good solution I guess :

needless to say it needs a soldering pot... ::)

or use a desoldering pump, I find that easier to use

The desoldering pot video is interesting, but the first video, wtf!!?? I've rarely seen someone make such a terrible attempt of desoldering with braid. He needed three attempts with the braid for a single pin, and he would have damaged other near parts with the amount of time the iron spent on the board. It should definitely be used as a "How not to do it" video!

I took this one at random just to illustrate the fact many videos (good or not) do exist.
but I must aggree better exempels could be found.

the soldering pot looks like a nice thing to have for the entousiast Retro-computer-and-electronic hobbyist.

BTW basic soldering skill is not quite difficult.
just need a firm hand and "délicatesse".
Patience too perhaps.

Hi gooner73,
your cartridge arrived this evening and has just been converted. The original Burning Rubber EPROM also survived the ordeal, so I'll send it back too and you can use the PCB for Pang and BR. It'll be in tomorrows post.

And an appropiate solder iron tip.

Try soldering surface mount devices using a large tip, it's like trying to write with your left hand (if you are right handed). ;)
