Which case style do you prefer.

Bryce

The 6128 is shorter and more compact, so it takes less desk space - gets my vote.

Bryce.

The real 664 as it looks far nicer with its beautiful blue keys. The Schneider version seems a bit pointless.

Munchausen

I agree that the 664 is pretty, but the positioning of the arrow keys looks very difficult to use, and as Bryce says, the 6128 is much more compact which is really nice!

Although the 664 is quite cool as a unique and quite rare device (particular if modded up to 6128-equivalent specs), I think I too prefer the 6128. Gotta love that compactness! Big Momma 464 looks crazily large in comparison.

Definitely the 6128 - the perfect symbiosis between beauty and effectiveness. Also it's the best for typing.

I never had a 664, so I don't know what it was like. As for the 464 we had back in the day and the 6128 I've got, I'd say the 464 because it just seems this 6128 I've got wasn't built for the harsh summer Australian conditions, it still works ok, but since the keys are right up close, it's like they rub together from all the expanding and shrinking which has been going on over the years. Never had this problem with the 464, maybe because they took a little bit more time with the keyboard or the keys could breath a little bit, I don't recall having to type a little harder just to get the keys down on it.

* Incorporating the Firmware :P
* I also like to problem solve code in BASIC :)   * And type-in Type-Ins! :D

Just out of interest, I have just weighed the keyboards.

The 664 weighed   2.33Kg
The 6128 weighed 1.92Kg
The 464 weighed   2.06Kg

The PLUS models were too big to get an accurate reading on the wall hung kitchen scales.

I must admit i can not choose between.I like a lot 6128 because it is compact and simple , 664 looks like a monolith with a touch of color caused by blue keys (i really love theses but i found them un-ergonomic)
"NOP" is the perfect program : short , fast and (known) bug free

The 664 has something too.

But I never liked the 464, a tape deck is just cave man stuff. Sorry, but I started with the 6128 - I have to love it the most.

For practical usage, yes, but on pure looks, the 464 wins hands down. It just "Oozes of Retro"(c). A lot more than the 6128. The 6128 was a very modern design for its time.

Bryce.

I got both the 664 and 6128. The latter wins hands down in looks

The answer to this question will be different whoever you ask, it is personal opinion,
So here's mine.

Between the 664 and 6128 I prefer the 664, but I will agree that the 6128 is a more practical size, although it is tending to look a bit to much like the spectrum, with the crammed keyboard and lack of colour. :D

I like the 464 the best overall because of its multicolour design and size, I prefer the taller key version and red and green graphics on the tape deck, I have a version with yellow and green graphics and I don't think it looks as good as the red and green.

If the 664 had had a few red keys as well as the blue ones then maybe I would have liked that best.

But for sheer practicality, the plus models are best especially as you can upgrade the 464+ to 6128+ fairly easily.

TFM

How said it must look like retro? I'm not (was never) interrested in 'Retro', but the CPC6128 is the perfect machine for me - and will stay it probably for eternity or close to that. Of course I wouldn't like to miss all my expanson hardware and software for it :)

If s/o want's it really 'Retro' then get a PDP

For beauty: 464>664>6128.

For ergonomics: 6128>664=464.

Btw, 6128s have fared pretty well under the Greek summers, so I'm not sure what's going on in Australia :D

That must be all those nasty animals and insects. I bet there's some spiders that can eat plastic. ;)

My preferences 6128 then 464. I'm ignoring the 664 on purpose, it's unergonomically high and has only 64k like the 464. It's also too expensive these days and the keyboard membrane is crap.

And I don't care whether the keys are coloured or not. I've learned the touch-typing method, so most of the time I'm staring at the screen not at the keyboard.
If I wanted colours in my working space I'd allow my wife to decorate it. :P

I cannot answer this having never actually used a 664/6128 IRL, (I only ever had a 464) but if someone wants to send me one of each then I will let you know which is best.

And an European Amstrad obviously has 1,000s of Leprechaun's servicing and keeping them in check, must explain all that Green on the Circuit Board. Leprechaun's never made it to Australia.

I prefer the Amstrad CPC 664 .... of course it has nothing to do with the fact that it was my first computer  :D  .... but if you want to make mods, it's the best nowadays with plenty of room inside it  8)  (the people don't do it just in case it goes broken .... I don't dare to touch mine indeed )

I agree, there is room to fit stuff inside but I do not want to "spoil" this rare!!! computer.

PS. If I trademark rare!!! will that stop ebay sellers putting it on nearly every listing. ::)

Well, I have one 6128 keyboard, and this one has 4 MB RAM and 2.5 MB Flash ROM and an hard-disc interface. And guess what... everything is internal! So what's the trick? First play testris, then get small ICs and then down there in the 6128 keyboard is a loooot of space
