Hello guys, just wanted to let you know that I just renewed the Downloads license as well the Likes license (and am going to install a nice update in a while). Total cost, €22.68.

I'm not going to renew the Notifications mod license since I haven't got any feedback on it, so I guess people don't use it...

Cheers

So let's use that like license  ;D

Gryzor

Heheh :D Haven't done the update yet to the new version, requires some prior work, so I'm doing it tomorrow or in a couple of days...

I don't really understand the Downloads section of the forum... Do you mean the tab at the top or the attachments to posts?

If it's the tab, why not just upload those files to the main wiki so everyone can easily find them...?

Gryzor

The wiki is not a file repository. It can't be, for technical reasons. Hence the separate section.

Huh?

There are lots of files to download from the Wiki.  For example I could never understand why a download of AA couldn't be on the issue page in the wiki.

What am I missing...?!

Gryzor

..the fact that we have nearly 4000 files on store :D

Try uploading them onto their respective pages...

Personally, I'd be ditching the likes system if it costs more than €0.68.

If people want to be liked they'll use Facebook.
* Using the old Amstrad Languages :D * And create my own ;)
* Incorporating the Firmware :P
* I also like to problem solve code in BASIC :)   * And type-in Type-Ins! :D

Then you're missing the point of Likes. It's not about ego, though sure, some people could use it that way. It's about content, and thankfully I don't think we've seen anyone going gaga over Likes.

Plus, Likes existed before Facebook. So it's not like FB defined what they are and what they're used for.

So, if you think that getting or giving a Like stokes your or someone else's ego, then just don't use it, it'll be better for everyone that way.

fano

We paid so i used  ;D
"NOP" is the perfect program : short , fast and (known) bug free

Follow Easter Egg products on Facebook !

Gryzor

So you did :D Brings the cost of the license per Like down :D

Axelay

Oh!  So you mean the more we use like, the less value it has!?  ;D

Gryzor

Axelay

Of course, sorry!  Too much exposure to game shows as a kid.  :)

Which raises my next point: I've contributed unusual and some interesting stuff, plus contributed on the Wiki, though for a mere 50-60 of my likes the rest of my likes come from Humour.
If you won't get rid of it, at least make it possible to disable so people like me have to stare and be insulted from it. Maybe Likes existed before Facebook but my point was people sign up to Facebook for the Likes & Followers. Forums might of had it first, though I've seen forums remove it because they don't work for the same reason Polls don't work!

No disabling possible. And I'm really not sure about your point; if I'm getting this correctly you complain because you're not getting enough likes?

(also, leave the wiki out of this, it's totally separate).

Sykobee (Briggsy)

The likes are useful, and encouraging, when someone makes a useful contribution to the forum.

Gryzor

Precisely. It's a form of self-curation for the community.

Well it's not for me to be selfish and wanting people to like me, but if you look at the number of likes I have and the number of likes the "About TFM Ban" you'll see what I mean. Ok I liked it when Bryce suggested to close the topic (on page 4), but the way I see it that piece of rubbish has accumulated more smiles in the short time it's existed!  :( Surely that doesn't mean that that topic has gained more value than my ridiculous programming inputs?
I understand the Wiki as separate (the CPM_User title still stands on there), but my inputs and information gathering and other stuff I've added to the Wiki and have posted a Topic here with links to those pages could be liked.

Yeah, but no one said this is a scientific method to anything. Some common sense must be applied. Likes won't change your life, fetch you the answer to life, the Universe and everything, won't wash your dishes and won't offer you a shoulder to cry on.

It's just a fun and simple way to pick things.

ralferoo

I gave you a like... :)

ralferoo

On a similar note, another forum I use has "thanks" and "groans". These aren't as upsetting as receiving a dislike, but they do make you more likely to skip over a contentious post first... e.g. people would give a negative post a groan rather than every post saying, "hey don't be negative" being liked.

But TBH, I just see it as a bit of fun too. It's nice to get a like, because then you know people are finding your stuff useful, but with the best will in the world a post about "kittens and CPCs" would always get far more likes than "complicated tech stuff". Because kittens.

Another on-off-topic remark: I would love to have a dis-like button to show ppl who are not contributing to a topic .. or rather rub their nose therein.
That way - and I will not, never!, give up hope here - disruptive replies to beloved topics will eventually decrease to a point where they are no more!

The last two posts combined are very meta, and brilliant.

Ok, to get serious, the problem with downvoting posts is that it promotes animosity, although there are positives to it as well (for instance, you could automatically hide a post when it receives say, 5 negative votes).

That said, we had the possibility to downvote a post for a couple of months, not long ago, but nobody used it, so I removed it :)
