Title: ChinnyVision - Epyx World Of Sports
Post by: chinnyhill10 on 19:50, 29 February 16
Twenty five pounds for four events and 10 minutes of gameplay. Twenty five pounds!  :picard:

Yes the four events themselves aren't bad, and the game looks nice. But goodness me, talk about poor value for money!

The BMX and Surfing bit was fun whilst it lasted, but the others weren't up to much. California Games rip off, but worse!

Well it's not a rip off as California Games is also an Epyx game and World Of Sports has reused some of the games from that. Clearly it's a memory thing as surely if they had mpre space on the cart they would have done more games or even gone for a full California Games/Summer Games port?

There really isn't much game in this and I find it hard to believe it can really be a memory issue, it's not like the individual levels have particularly detailed graphics or anything.

I do have a soft spot for the surfing bit though and, length aside, it is quite a nice little game. But you'd really be feeling the pain in your wallet if you'd forked out £25 for it instead of pretty much any of the other good cart games.

Couldn't they have used 1 tune instead of 4 and got a bit extra on here? Or worked out some kind of compression system? It just seems a bit haphazard.

The Master System version of California Games gets 6 sports, but that's on a 256k cartridge.

I imagine it was fairly rushed and hacked together without much care really. It's essentially 4 separate games so on a 128k cart they only get 32k per game which is a bit tight. In fact even less than that once you take off the menu screen and overheads.

Does anyone know how much storage this Cart game actually takes up, did it exceed the the cart limits?

I don't think any of the carts were over 128K, the GX has a maximum size of 512K. My money is not size being the issue though, but time. I suspect most of the cart releases were done on a tight schedule, possibly with only limited access to production hardware. That's probably why most of the titles are, at best, lightly modified CPC releases and those that do more heavily rely on the Plus hardware, like this, being shorter and simpler.

Would make a lovely little budget title, wouldn't it?

...or, better yet, a Christmas covertape or something!
