Title: ChinnyVision - Roland In The Caves
Post by: chinnyhill10 on 14:11, 25 November 16
Known as Bugaboo The Flea on other systems, Roland In The Caves was one of the first games many CPC owners probably played:

CPC version is quite different to the others. Arguably more playable. Did like the MSX version though with the hardware sprites.

Never liked Roland in the Caves when I first played it but it grew on me. I can't get past level 2 though. :(

Needs more level variations really, it's the same cave over and over again but with more pink goo.

Protip: Hold down at the very start of the cave (before you even start falling).

Yeah, the CPC version is clearly the best overall, I always loved the graphics (for the time), but it was so infuriating. OTOH an early example of game fear, with the pterodactyl coming for you.

It's a shame there weren't more layouts rather than just making the same cave system even more infuriating.

I do like the plant eating animation on the MSX version!

Actually uses the hardware sprites on the MSX so even if the scrolling is terrible, the sprite animation is good.

Pretty much this, escape the cave once or twice and there's no real motivation to go back again...

It was a difficult game, although I enjoyed it in CPC. However, I must say that I played much more the second part:

it was not bad. Not original by any means, but a bit less infuriating and quite funny. Mode 0 choice was not bad either, imho.

Dim memory of playing the follow up on an emulator years ago. I seem to remember thinking why bother doing it. Presumably it was a fondly remembered title in Spain?

I think that, as you say, Poogaboo is much more fondly remembered in Spain than anywhere else. You know, it was coming from Opera Soft, a well known and respected company, and presented in the press as the second part of a great classic. Micromania (probably the best selling computer magazine in Spain back in those days) also took some care in promoting the game, although I remember that the overall score was not super great (a 6 maybe?). However, back in those days, and particularly in Micromania, a 6 was not a bad score at all. Moreover, Poogaboo (at least the version I bought) was sold in a very big nice and nice box, something that had quite a lot of appeal for the 11 year old me  :) .  I must say that I enjoyed it a lot and probably the hype contributed to make the whole experience sweeter, despite of being a mediocre product  :D .

Did they give it away for free in Spain with the 464?
