Hello,
the tapes for CPCRetroDev2016 are just available,
but there're no news about the CPCRetroDev 2017 (the previous CPCRetroDev started in June).
Is someone knows if there will be CPCRetroDev compo this year ?
Thanks,
Arnaud.
There's no news about it on their website:
http://cpcretrodev.byterealms.com/contest-en/cpcretrodev-2016/
So I'm not sure what's happening. :(
I was wondering this but I figured I would just starting writing something and assume it is happening sometime.
The implication from Ronaldo's post in the cpcretrodev cassette thread is that it is on this year sometime.
I certainly hope they will do it again, it seemed to bring a lot of submissions, and some great games last year!
I was wondering about this too, and have been asking on the CPC IRC channels too, but no one seems to know anything.
Hi,
I can confirm you that there will be another compo this year. More details and the oficial announcement will come soon from Ronaldo as usual, but you can start your projects with confidence.
Time to pick out an appropriate Spanish sounding alias, then open up Notepad.

Great news ! I can't wait for the official launch.
And may be there will be a new version of CPCTelera ;D
I hope they don't scrap the BASIC compo this year. I finally have a 464 compatible BASIC game working and nearly complete. :)
Worst case scenario, just release it anyway. :P

If this happens you could still submit your game and compete in the PRO category :)
There you go, guys! Enjoy the contest! :D

I'm happy to see that the rules are clear now regarding sharing screenshots, videos, teasers, etc during the development process. I think it really helps to promote the CPC and the contest, so big thumbs up on that!
I also like that different categories have different weight, and that will make the results more balanced; being more important that the game is fun and playable.
I'm not sure about the part where it allows licensing content without restriction, for two reasons:
- First, an entry could score high points for licensed content; not authored by the person/team submitting the entry.
- And second, it could be used to circumvent the "one game per author" rule. Sure, the author of the licensed content won't be considered co-author of the entry, but if the license requires credit (and, of course, we must comply with the license), in real terms it means someone could be part of several entries.
In my experience in other competitions, when licensed content is allowed it usually refers to open content (eg. creative commons) so it doesn't result in an unfair advantage for one entry; you can use licensed content but everybody can access to that same content, and that levels the field.
I'm curious to see how it turns out; specially regarding music, as there are a limited number of music artists in the CPC scene that are at a completely different level (you know who they are!).
Anyway, already looking forward to play the entries of this year!
EDIT: typos!

Fantastic! Thanks Ronaldo.
Just wondering - is there an English version of the competition page?

[EDIT] Actually it's ok, Google Translate does a good job with the page.
There is an English version of the page here

So having taken last year off are you planning to do it this year?
and featured!
I can't wait :)

I'm certainly considering it.
I've thought of a game design... one that will hopefully be a bit easier for players than RUNCPC was!

Good idea having a separate category for the University students.
As they tend to be new to the CPC it was always going to be tough for them to make the top 5 in the PRO category.
Hopefully the increased chance of winning a prize means they put more effort into their projects and we end up with better results / games from them.
Thought I'd give this thread a bump as I was having trouble finding it along with their website. Anyway the Deadline is coming up fast 31st October.
Hope those programs are coming along nicely. :D
I'm looking forward to seeing what everyone produces - both the 'pro-level' developers, and the people who are maybe producing their first CPC games! It's really nice to see people release new stuff for the good old CPC!
Good luck everyone!
You may also want to encourage developers on twiiter, and give them some feedback.

Most people (and students) are developing in assembler for this edition. They deserve additional cheering! :D
I have to regretfully announce that I have decided to withdraw from this year's competition.
I just haven't had the time.
:'(
A real shame too, as I'm very happy with the tile engine I've created.

Save it for next year then. Keep working on it when you find the time.
(You can complain when your 2-year long project ended up taking 5 years).

Sorry to heard that ??? but your work is not lost.
It's really hard to complete a whole game project alone.
All additional elements of coding (game design, graphics, and sound) are really important and require a lot of time and energy.

It is a shame. I agree with @mr_lou (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=96) with regards for saving it for next year, though it's a long time to wait :D Better late than never though.
That's a shame, but understandable when you want to create the best that you can. Next year! :)

I'm really worried with my entry when i see the new RetroByte game of this year :

This is why I aim to produce the best game I can (with my current skills) rather than aiming for a particular place in the competition.
I mean the rules dictate what you want to build somewhat but I feel that producing something I am happy with is far more important than any score that I might get.
I think one of the RetroBytes members (Tony) said the other day on Twitter that they couldn't make it this edition because lack of time. Not sure if this is final, though.
The game looks really awesome, it's a pity if they can't submit it to the competition, but the game will be released anyway and I'm sure it'll be very celebrated.
Finally my game is finished and send to cpcretrodev.
I'd like to have coded a more optimized engine, but i'm not confident enough in my assembly skill.
The name of my game is Bitume, and i really hope it will be fun to play :D
Edit : Do you know if a confirmation mail is send after uploading the game on cpcretrodev page ?
Well done!
Looking forward to it.
Regarding a confirmation email, I don't think I received one when I entered 2 years ago.
Congratulations on finishing something. :)
I just submitted as well and its only 1:17AM (almost an hour earlier than last year :P )

Thanks and congratulation too. It's always a challenge to finish a game even without dead line.
Looking forward to seeing everyone's submissions, it's great to see so many people giving coding a go on these old machines! (even though there's far easier stuff they could be developing!)

Did you send the Akumas part 2 to the Retrodev?

No it's not in there
I'm pretty sure the bad language and psychotic main character in Ep2 must break a good few of the rules of retrodev!!!
the code-base is also heavily based on Ep1, which was already released, so it wouldn't count anyway - oh, and CPC retrodev requires games to be single load - so 4 disks is pretty certainly out!
I think I'd have to start from scratch with something much smaller if I were going to try for it!
It seems to have 29 entries this years (34 for cpcretrodev 2016)

send it to me now... i will see !

Thats good. Last year half of the games were demos, if this year we have proper games that would be an improvement :)

I've had a look at the videos of this year's entries, and Bitume looks fantastic!
Is it just inspired by Asphalt, or is it meant to be a sequel?

I'd like to have made a better video that shows others enemies and levels with new graphics, but i ran out of time.

Yeah Bitume is on my shortlist of 5 or 6 games from CPCRD that i will test as soon as i can :)

There is no DSK for MoonMan, only CDT. Is it possible to have one? I want to test all this on the my CPC6128.

That's a good game that has a really nice arcade and retro feeling.
The intro screen looks a lot like Gryzor/Renegade :D This would have been a good commercial game at the time.
I like the fact that the game handles well 2 button joy (at least via redefine). You have to manage your weapons cleverly.
But i think i came across a bug. After the first game over, the button 1 on the joy is not detected if you restart a game (but it is on the redefine keys screen)
In case you are interested, today from 17:30h (CET, GMT+1) we will be talking live about #CPCRetroDev 2017 Awards giving Ceremony, Results and Games here at Youtube Channel Juanje Juega.

Normally the default layout handle two joystick buttons and "COPY" on CPC to change weapon.
@ronaldo (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=1227) i have got a question, i have a version of bitume on dsk with loading screen in overscan (thanks to @Ast (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=573) for loader) i haven't time to include to cpcretrodev.
Is possible to update the dsk on the cpcretrodev site or i simply put the file in forum ?
Technically not, because entries should reflect what was submitted to the contest.
However, if you want, we can post it additionally, apart from the entries. We may add a post to the website and include your content as an extended version or something similar if you like.
If not, you can always send it to cpc-power, cpcrulez, post it here, add it to archive. Whatever you prefer, we may also spread it thrugh social media :) .
Of course, I din't tell you before but, congratulations for your 5th place. Your game was very nice and polished :).

Yeah... So that's not a terrible bug as as you said, no need to redefine keys to have full 2 button support.
Anyway, it might strike someone who want to swap the two buttons by redefining.
