Title: #CPCRetroDev 2023
Post by: CPCRetroDev on 22:39, 10 August 23
Hello everyone!
We are pleased to officially announce that the 11th edition of the Amstrad Video Game Creation Contest at the University of Alicante, #CPCRetroDev2023, has begun!
As usual, we would like to invite all of you to participate in the contest, new games are always welcome! ^_^

This year, we want to pay tribute to a great Amstrad game that turns 30 years old: Super Cauldron by TITUS.
Including a homage to this game in the gameplay will add extra points to the score of the game that incorporates it.

In the same way, we want to honor the commercial farewell of the Amstrad CPC by awarding extra points for adding a gesture to your games saying goodbye to this beloved platform.

The game submission phase will be open from October 13th to November 3rd, 2023, through our itch.io page http://bit.ly/CPCRetroDev2023itchio (http://bit.ly/CPCRetroDev2023itchio), so remember to take it into account to not miss the opportunity to participate in the contest. We are looking forward to seeing your games!

Also, we would like to announce that the Sponsors phase of the contest has already been opened for those who wish to sponsor the contest and it will be available for registration until September 15th, 2023.
On our official website we have a list with all the prizes that need a sponsor so, if you want to be part of this great contest, contact us through our email address cpcretrodev.org@byterealms.com (mailto:cpcretrodev.org@byterealms.com) before September 15th, 2023.

You can find all the information and rules for this edition on our official website:
http://bit.ly/CPCRetroDev2023 (http://bit.ly/CPCRetroDev2023)

Finally, remember that we announce all our updates through our Twitter account @CPCRetroDev, so stay tuned to not miss any details.
And don't forget to comment with the hashtag #CPCRetroDev!!

We are looking forward to your participation!

From the Spanish version I guess it is just a hommage to the ending of the commercial age, nothing about the end of cpcretrodev, if that is what you're afraid.

Quote◦ La despedida comercial debe ser parte del final del juego. Al completar el juego se debe mostrar un mensaje, icono, imagen, guiño o similar referente a que en 1993, hace 30 años, terminó la vida comercial del Amstrad CPC.

Oh ok. That's good to know.
I won't be submitting an entry this year, but I intend to do something for next year's comp, so I certainly hope the comp is still running next year.  :)

Yeah, it's not like I thought it was the last competition, but it sounded weirdly pessimistic. Perhaps lost in translation.

It says that you'll get extra points if you reference the end of the commercial era of the CPC.

Which is a bit weird if you ask me as there's no special date now, like "25 years from the last CPC made" or similar.

Then again, I may be wrong...  ;D

Well, to me it says "early 90s" so it could be a reference to anything from that era? Like, say, Donnie Darko or Clerks (ooh that'd be a great game!)?

My guess is that it need to be CPC related, but don't take my word for it.

Nice to see that it is announced at last :) , I already started a month ago and am fully prepared for it to take over all my spare time as usual ;D .

QuoteThe commercial farewell must be part of the end of the game. Upon completing the game, a message, icon, image, homage, or something similar must be displayed, referring to the fact that in 1993, 30 years ago, the commercial life of the Amstrad CPC ended.
The rules for the farewell seem rather specific. I would prefer there was more room for creative interpretation.
Not sure what I am going to do yet, I am contemplating whether I could gesture different games through the commercial lifetime to do this but it might not be quite what they are looking for.

Good news ! CPCRetroDev 2023 is here !

I made a quick search on internet and i haven't really found any informations about this fact.

It's rather strange as gesture, i don't see what we can do (tombstone  ??? )

I haven't done any research but I remember Xyphoe mentioning Super Cauldron was really late in the CPC's commercial lifespan.
Need to do something to celebrate the commercial life of the CPC but don't want to do something that suggests its death.
Especially since it was just as much the start of a new era as the end of the previous one.

One could draw a CPC and 1984-1993 but that sure sounds like an obituary.

We've had quite a busy few days, but we're now ready to announce our sponsors for this year's #CPCRetroDev!

This year, we'll start by announcing one of our most dedicated sponsors. This anonymous sponsor has been supporting #CPCRetroDev for the past 4 years and will sponsor the special mentions this year with a total of 400€!

On the other hand, Amstrad Sakis (https://amstradsakis.blogspot.com/), a former participant of the contest, and Somos de Amstrad (SdA) (https://www.facebook.com/somosdeamstrad/) have been sponsoring the BASIC category of the contest for 3 years. However, a new sponsor has joined their team this year, and along with Dark Steph (https://twitter.com/DarkSteph3), they are sponsoring the BASIC category with a total of 120€ in prizes.

Are you familiar with the BLAST Annual  (https://blastannual.com/)book?
They have been sponsoring #CPCRetroDev since 2017, for a whopping 6 years, with their "Opera Prima" mention for the best game by novice developers.
Will you be the one to win their 50€ prize?

People have spoken, and so has AUA (https://auamstrad.es/) in their desire to sponsor, for their third consecutive year, the special mention for the most popular game of the contest.
As in previous years, their mention will award 200€ to the most voted game by the audience.

We greatly appreciate the support from all of the sponsors and developers.

Dear Community members :),
We are excited to inform you that, for the second consecutive year, the Asociación de Usuarios de Amstrad (AUA) (https://auamstrad.es/) is sponsoring the Public Vote Award. The voting process for this prestigious award, along with its accompanying prize, will commence today. Here's how it will work:
Of course, you are free to promote games and gather votes, but please do so ethically. Itch.io has robust measures in place to detect fraudulent voting activities. We strongly advise against any actions that could be construed as manipulative or unfair and we remember you that they are against the terms of itchio's service, and that could result in problems to your personal or group accounts. We hope you to help us ensure that the award is given to the most deserving team, and we hope you find the voting process enjoyable and fair :).
We wish you a fun voting experience and the best of luck!
Warm regards,

For me I think the graphics style suits the spirit of the game perfectly. I like these kind of children book's like style graphics. Same for your previous entry Druid and Droid. It deserved a better result in the contest imho. Specially when everything's done by one person. And both games musical themes are awesome.

I was thinking about doing an original picture for an alternative loading screen for this new game of yours, but I guess I'll pass for now since I don't really understand how it works the way it does. Not the colour flipping thing that also I should see how the colour mix exactly works, but the weird way the loading screen is stored in video memory. I'm not a programmer at all. Also I don't either know if you're ok with the idea :D
Anyways, excellent work. Best of luck in the contest.

That would be awesome! You don't have to take care of the technical side of it, I just send you the palette of the mixed colors with modern color notation and if you hand me a PNG I'll do the conversion!  8)

Thank you, that's very kind. As for the music, I'm kind of a pro, but the gfx are always a lot of fun to do.

That would be awesome! You don't have to take care of the technical side of it, I just send you the palette of the mixed colors with modern color notation and if you hand me a PNG I'll do the conversion!  8)

Good then,

Ah nice then. I usually "fix" or retouch already existent loading screens but I've made a couple of loading screens from scratch for homebrew games. Let me know how to stay in touch to keep this thread on topic. Grats on your 3rd position BTW.

Well done to all the entries.
I'll have to look at the awards ceremony later.

@Targhan
Any chance of a return of Targhan's CPCRetroDev reviews?

Great stuff as always. So I heard that the university will not be running CPC retro dev next year? I hope the competition will continue in some form; it would be a shame if it wasn't around for the CPC's 40th birthday.

Hi folks.

I only caught a tiny bit of the ceremony, but I heard mention that this would be the last cpcretrodev, at least at the Uni of Alicante.
Does anyone have any more details about this?

Thanks.

[EDIT] Ah, I just heard xyphoe's explanation of it at the start of his stream. I hope the comp can continue in some form.

I'm so happy that CNG finally won the comp!
I don't think it's the best game he has entered, but as far as being someone who consistently delivers, he absolutely deserves to have won the crown at least once.

Commercial farewell? I'm still buying new Commercial products for my CPC.

There's a brief look at the competition in issue 255 of Retro Gamer, in shops today.

It would be a real shame if there weren't a 40th-anniversary competition - maybe other people could organise it, with the help of the existing sponsors?

Is there a ZIP with all the games somewhere?  :)

Not that I know of. I think you have to download each game individually from itch.io (https://itch.io/jam/cpcretrodev2023/entries).

And that's pretty time consuming.

Just for your interest, Brundij drew the perfect title screen for my game and I have finally included in the loader. Disk and Tape files on my itch io are updated! Thank you so much, Brundij!
