Been looking forward to this.

Been watching to see when this would be announced.
Not that hasn't stopped me from starting my next game.  ;D

Not a lot of detail yet but that game looks a little harder to gesture as from the video it doesn't look like there are a lot of graphics to choose from.

If it is half as good as previous contests... it'll be bloody great. :)

I've watched the video of Larcena's Legacy over and over again, looking for something that can be used as a tribute.
Finally found something... hope it'll be enough of a connection!

Hi

Are there already bases for the contestants?
Dates?
Title: Re: #CPCRetroDev2022
Post by: awergh on 14:59, 13 September 22
My guess is that the submission date will be 1st November but they haven't announced it yet unfortunately.

Post by: awergh on 11:28, 23 September 22
The submission date and the awards have been announced  ;D however slightly confusing the two different sites have different submission dates.

It is either 2nd November
http://cpcretrodev.byterealms.com/cpcretrodev-2022-2/

Or 1st November
https://itch.io/jam/cpcretrodev2022

Obviously the more time the better but clarity would be good.

They corrected it, it's the 2nd!

I can see 2nd on both but they have different times (1000 UTC+10 vs 2359 UTC+1), usually the official site is the source of truth.

Hello everybody,

We are happy to announce that this year's rules are now available on itch.io https://bit.ly/CPCRetroDev2022itchio (https://bit.ly/CPCRetroDev2022itchio) as well as this year's dates, which you can also find on the official website of this edition https://bit.ly/CPCRetroDev2022 (https://bit.ly/CPCRetroDev2022).

Please note that this year there is a new rule for third party content whereby:
1) It is allowed to use it under express license (the license must be included in the submission), but most of the game must be own content.
2) Third-party content will not be taken into account in the jury's assessments.
3) The aforementioned also applies to reused own content that already existed before.

Please take these changes into account when developing your games.
We look forward to seeing what you have prepared for this new edition.

Kind regards.

I agree with gryzor, we need a bit more clarity on this.
In my case particularly part 3.

I don't have any third party content in the form of sound, music, graphics, levels but I do have some third party code for arkos tracker and a getkeys function that came from here. However I do have content that I have previously created that I have reused in the game (mostly in the form of functions and the general structure of the code).
It seems a bit unnecessary to rewrite code just to make it different when the existing code is something that I have written myself and does what I need it to already.

Although I might be misunderstanding and I should just be careful not to leave in too many placeholder graphics and sounds from last year.

Of course, new rules always are bound to require explanations  :). This rule in particular has been proposed by many people on past two years, in different forms. The motivation is simple:

During past two years, this debate has been intense, because there have been examples. Almost all jury members agree that developers have to be judged by their creations, not by the use of already existing content. Many of you have also expressed similar views. On the organization we have discussed it and we agree. Therefore, we have a new rule for this scenario.

In general, this does not apply to code. The rule is for content and for the resulting game. We all know that code reuse is not only logical, but a desired practice. So, the rule is about "content", not code. That is, Game Design, Graphics, Music, Stories and related stuff.

Now, I think that, to properly proceed with more doubts and considerations, first it would be advisable to carefully read the PDF with the official rules. Then, when you have a detailed idea on what the rules exactly say, we may proceed with more doubts, if you like :)

Hello

I am going to use sounds that already exist previously, and I have the author authorization by email.
How should I indicate that when I'll upload the game?

Thanks

Please, take into account that my explanations are only explanations. What counts is the rule. Therefore, that's why I am asking people to first carefully read the rules in the official PDF. I'm glad to try to explain any doubts that may arise, but I think this is dangerous if rules are not first read and interpreted. Rules say what you have to do when using third party content. Could you please read them and then ask me any doubts you have afterwards? :)

Thanks ronaldo that clears that up for me  ;D (I will try to keep identical graphics and sounds to a minimum though).
It does make a lot of sense as making your own original content should be encouraged even if graphics aren't what some of us are best at.

As you said code reuse is completely logical but I did wonder as I thought in an interview you did with Xyphoe you mentioned wanting to encourage students to build things from scratch rather than using what has been done before but maybe I misunderstood.

Hello everyone,
For yet another year we are less than a month away from closing the #CPCRetroDev submissions and, as usual, we would like to announce the sponsors that make this possible year after year.

Let us start by one of last year's winners, Lambda Mikel, who won in the category of best Artificial Intelligence from the #CPCRetroDev2021 edition with the game "The Wrath of the MCPC (https://itch.io/jam/cpcretrodev2021/rate/1254250)" and donated his prize to this year's contestants.
Thanks to him, 100€ will be destined on his behalf to the winners of the PRO and UA categories of this 10th edition.

For the second year in a row Amstrad Sakis (https://amstradsakis.blogspot.com/) and Somos de Amstrad (SdA) (https://www.facebook.com/somosdeamstrad/) come together to bring us the BASIC category.
As last year, their 100€ will be divided into 2 prizes of 60€ and 40€ that will be awarded to the two best games developed in BASIC without the use of external libraries.
We look forward to seeing which games you will submit using this exciting language.  :)

If you're the author of both, and the graphics are made specifically for this game, it really doesn't matter.
If the assets were previously used in any other work, you will need to authorize yourself to use it, and it will not be counted by the jury, as it's reused content.
Hope it helps.

First and foremost, this competition values the innovation, creativity and artistic expressiveness of videogame developers.
This is why Trusiga sponsors the Trusiga (https://twitter.com/trusiga) Award for the best final product with 100€.
The standard keeps rising year after year, will your game live up to it?

The demons have taken control over both heaven and hell and this little angel is the only one able to end their reign. However, it will have to decide between fighting in heaven, where it would have a few more opportunities, or going for an all-in in hell.
What will be the angel's choice?

42 entries seems to be the new record of participation. We counted 41 entries in 2018.
"After months of hard work and lot of increasing interest, no less than 41 new games have entered #CPCRetroDev 2018. An outstanding record that will be incredibly difficult to beat for sure."
No BASIC games this year.

Tiny deathmatch is in BASIC. There is also a .BIN file in the disk, but the game is no different if you delete it and run the .BAS game.
I didn't find any other game in BASIC in the other games.

Hi guys!

The CPCRetroDev needs your help! We need your expert opinion to chose a game for AUA's (https://auamstrad.es/) award to Public Vote  :)

Hope you enjoy the contest and the games!

  • You can vote once per day ('till 9/nov inclusive)

If the voting takes place over 7 days, and each voter can only rate 3 games per day, then that means each voter can only rate 21 games in total - but as there are 42 entries, how do we know that the distribution of games to rate among the voters is balanced? Some games could potentially receive many more requests than others, which doesn't seem very fair to me.

I'll rather prefer starting with a clear statement: I don't expect the system to be fair, as that would be quite an achievement :) . In my personal experience, I haven't had the opportunity to participate on or design a system that is actually fair. All systems I have known have advantages and disadvantages. My only expectation is being able to improve itchio's system we used on past year, which had many many problems.

With respect to voting, we are not expecting most of the voters to vote all 7 days. In fact, our expectation is that 7-days voters would be a minority. That's a design consideration: we are not relying on voters voting all days. Moreover, your observation is correct, but it is not considering how the system works. When you vote, you are not rating games individually. On the contrary, you are rating games comparatively. You are deciding which one is best and worst out of a random sample of 3. Therefore, if you actually were expected to "rate everything" you should vote (39 over 3) combinations, so you would need 54834 votes.

Of course, we are not depending on voters rating every possible comparison individually. We are relaying on statistics. We need a great sample of votes, not necessarily from the same person, comparing sets of 3 games. With a great sample, statistical estimations will be nice approximations. That will be enough for the system to work correctly, as we have designed it.

Our main concern is that the system requires many votes. We expected to get 500-1000 individual votes, extrapolating on what we had past year on itchio. However, as this first day is going over, it seems we will probably get much less than that, if things doesn't change. That would make statistical estimations worse, of course.

In any case, it is a new system and it will have its own set of advantages and disadvantages. Depending on how it works, we may consider improving it for next years, or designing a new one. We are not affraid of the system performing badly. That's always a risk, no mather what you do. In fact, as I said, using itchio's system worked really bad last year. That's why we have been designing a new one :).

Be it as it may, just a last thought. Try not to judge the system based on traditional rating systems, because it is different. You are not issuing a stars or percentage rating. It works based on 3-way comparisons. It will have many things to be criticized for sure, but any proper analysis needs to start considering it different from traditional methods :)

In any case, hope it works better than last year. That would be a nice starting point for future discussions :)

While I play all the games eventually it is a good way to play plenty of the games in a manageable way.
By voting once a day does that mean you can only vote every 24 hours or you can only vote on each day of voting?

After voting it looked like the second set of games included my own, I was hoping it would offer me everything but my own.
I doubt I can be entirely objective with rating my own game.

I will see what it offers me when I vote again later today.

It means once every day. With a google form it's difficult to limit by user :). The limitation is for all users, so it means days from 00:00 to 23:59h.

It would be nice that the system took this into account, but it would be quite complex. In fact, it would be easy to fool by simply using a different itchio account.

In any case, you would are usually able to vote to your own game in most systems. In this system, you can, if you are lucky enough to get your game in the 3 random ones you are assigned to vote. Like in other systems, that should tend to compensate with the number of total votes, as all participants vote their own games if they get them.

As I said before, the system is far from perfect, but in terms of advantages/disadvantages, it seems to be improving previous ones (at least, from our point of view).

Thanks, I didn't write the music but yes he would have written a classical piece.

My understanding the process goes like this, he writes the score, imports the midi into arkos 2 and then makes any adjustments to the instruments in arkos.

OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT FROM THE ORGANIZERS OF #CPCRetroDev 2022
REASON: Errors in final results

Hello everyone,

Thank you very much for your participation and feedback. Thanks to you, we have reviewed the results of #CPCRetroDev 2022 and found that we made 2 errors scoring entries. These errors affect Dire Dare / CNGSoft and Deep, Deeper, Deepest / Carlos Perezgrin. Both games should have +25 points, as their gestures are valid and we did not count them that way.

We are very sorry for the errors and we thank you for informing us about them as soon as you detected them.

Both games should have been ranked 1 place higher than announced at the ceremony: Dire Dare should be 2nd and Deep, Deeper, Deepest, 4th. However, this changes after the ceremony affect Penguin Attack / Pat Morita and Druid & Droid / Leosoft, which were announced as 2nd and 4th.

To solve this problem, we have decided:

  - That Dire Dare and Deep, Deep, Deepest will get 25 points and rank 1 place higher both, as they deserved.
  - That Penguin Attack and Druid & Droid will remain in their respectively announced positions, not being penalized.
  - Therefore, Dire Dare and Penguin Attack will tie for 2nd place, and Deep, Deep, Deepest and Druid & Droid will tie for 4th.

The final ranking (top 5) will be as follows:

  1st Castaway.................400 €
  2nd Dire Dare................300 € (+100€)
  2nd Penguin Attack...........300 €
  4th Deep, Deeper, Deepest....100 € (+ 50€)
  4th Druid & Droid............100 €

The organization will assume the costs as responsible for the errors.

Again, we apologize and hope not to make this kind of errors in the future.

Thanks to all of you.
