Title: musik200 xmas 2023 xmas edition musik disk released!
Post by: BSC on 00:19, 22 December 23
Hola,

a new fancy nice sounding musik disk was made and released today. Full of old musik using only the envelope generator of the AY chip to create 6 channels of raspy sounds. Some wifes and gfs will probably like it. Have fun and merry xmas!

Great news! Do you have an archive with the files? DSK is not really handy when you just have albireo, x-mass or ...

I tested it on a real CPC. This is interesting. 6 channels you say? I admit I cannot hear more than 3. Since the sounds are very "raspy" and are all the same, they conflict and prevent from hearing them individually.

I guess this is some kind of PWM?

How would you transfer the files from the archive, assuming it is something like a .zip file? I typically use https://github.com/cpcsdk/idsk to move files in and out of DSK images, is that not an option for you?

I think it's more related to the 1-bit engines (https://gwern.net/doc/cs/hardware/2020-troise.pdf) used on the ZX Spectrum. The tone generators re-trigger a single ramp-down from the envelope generator every time one of the virtual channels period has a zero-crossing. And there are 6 of those, coupled such that 3 pairs play the same notes slightly offset to introduce subtle beating/interference. The engine could just as well play 6 independent melodies, but I have chosen to pair them together because I like how the beating adds richness to the sounds. Yes, it's raspy as advertised :)
