Title: Teodoro No Sabe Volar - preview
Post by: Nich on 19:37, 17 November 12
It seems that the MSX group Dimension Z (http://www.dimensionzgames.com/) are working on a CPC conversion of the Spectrum game Teodoro No Sabe Volar (http://www.worldofspectrum.org/infoseekid.cgi?id=0025250&loadpics=3), which was released by the Spanish group RetroWorks (http://www.retroworks.es/) in 2010. The YouTube video below was uploaded a couple of months ago. I'm very surprised that no one seems to have noticed it until now!

Preview of Teodoro No Sabe Volar on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9S8Gchhq2e8)
I have played the Spectrum version, and based on what I've seen in the video, the CPC version plays a lot better! :P

Looks really nice. A happy little tune in the background fits the game-play nicely, too!
Can't wait for the release!

Well, it's not a big secret between the spanish people, we played to a beta (only a few details to be finished) during the last weekend in the ParlaBytes spanish retromeeting :) and i'm sure that it's going to be announced here when it's finished :P

If anyone is interested in how the Speccy version plays here's an online version;
http://www.sinclair.hu/java_emu/emu.php?jateknev=Teodoro%20no%20sabe%20volar&tapfajlnev=TeodoroNSVen.tap.gz (http://www.sinclair.hu/java_emu/emu.php?jateknev=Teodoro%20no%20sabe%20volar&tapfajlnev=TeodoroNSVen.tap.gz)

The 464 version looks like it plays a lot better! (Yay for CPC!)

EDIT: I hope there's an English (... and French and German) version coming out, too!

Hello,

'm Pepe Vila, the developer of the MSX and Amstrad version.
Glad to know that the game is enjoying worldwide.

The turns I'm giving so that everything can go into a 464, and I do not believe this to be not easy.

Currently the game is completely finished, with all its soundtrack and sfx's which was what remained to be done.

Now work to incorporate the history of the game start and end of the story. But I've run out of space for the 2 stories and I'm wondering how to get it all.

Sorry for my Bad English.

P.S. We talk about port from spectrum, but is a product fully programmed for amstrad, using hardware-in Dual Screen mode 0, with pixel graphics and movement.

The only thing I was thinking of was to simplify the title screen (ie take out the image of Teodoro, just leave that as the loading screen). Would this give you enough space left for the end-story?

Or, perhaps load the end-story in as a separate file from disc?

The main menu of the game is something you do not want to remove or reduce.

One of the things I'm thinking, is played only once in the history of the game start. history of course has to be tucked end the game.

I do not want to do multi-load, as in tape version that is a nuisance.

I am with something that could make the two stories are included.

The main menu of the game is something you do not want to remove or reduce.
Ok, another option would be to pack the intro story screens (ie full screens, not sprites and text) into the same file as the loading/title screen.

Have the intro story play out (as it does now, screen by screen) and then end with the loading screen.
Each intro screen can be packed with Exomizer the same way as the loading/title screen is, but because they are less complicated, they will be a lot smaller in size.

Pro -
- It means you can have the end story loaded as part of the main game and it would fit in the same space as the intro story currently does.

Cons -
- You only get to see the intro story once.
- TAPE users will have a slightly longer load time, even with SPEED WRITE 1.

May be using Exomizer to pack all data and do miracles, like it does for R-Type ?  ;D

I currently use as the aplib compressor, but do not rule out using the new version of Exomizer.
The 51 screens and all the music and some other things but they are already compressed. but were that it would be impossible to put all this in a 464.

But calm I've found the solution that can give me the space I need to incorporate the remainder.

Oh, this looks really lovely, I really like the colour scheme. Very cute in everything. Wish the playing area was bigger, mainly because things look cramped in there, but it doesn't matter much :)

Oh, here's the Specrum original:

Of course compile 2 versions.

A Spanish version and another version in English.

If anyone wants to translate into another language such as French, German, Dutch etc etc.

He provided the texts in English and you send me the translation.

And with any good right. I do all my software (means if I find a translator) in German, English, French and ... Spanish! Everybody should do! At least... an English version should be available.

MacDeath, i have read your french comment and although the engine can look as Lala, the only common point is that both are platform games  :P

For the geeks, it's full assembly code, that means it's fast and smooth, and the printing of new screens is instantaneous  ;)

For everybody, this game exudes quality everywhere, because that, i strongly recommend to use the real machine, for enjoying the superb graphic and music. This cpc version has been tested by Metr, and his feedback has helped to make the game more playable.

For me, it's one of the best cpc games ever :) ... but  of course, as with "Imaginario Colectivo", retrogamer only will load the game, make an snapshot in the second screen, reset and copypaste a shit review filled with topics (spanish games are hard, cpc colours are not nice as c64, it's not a shit clone of home runner for zx and because that we can not give a 97%, better less than 60% + -10% for being a cpc game, ...), showing again how "experts" they are in good games and everything cpc related.

PD: I forgot one of the best reasons to come to the next Retro Madrid and it's that you will be able to buy it in its wonderful package (pictures are from my ZX Spectrum original with an autograph of the author, Pagantipaco, the best 10€ ever retro-used). I'm not sponsored by Retro Works, etc etc... :P

I guess technically it is not the "same" engine as Lala...
but still... both platform "à la Jet set Willy".
I'm fine with this of course.
I also found the graphics somewhat "à la rick dangerous" concerning the palette and mode0. which is good too.

As told, it would be great if ESPsoft pages and all those games production from iberia had more pages in "Ingles".

Ok so...Is this a 64K or 128k game ?
Disk version ? (3"1/2 can be nice provided it can run on "B" external disk drive...)
Will it feature Cat'art on disk version ?

When will it be released ?
What the price ?

Posst Edit : ok nice booklet.

Hi everybody!

Glad to see you like our next game. It lefts some minor graphics to be finished (I'm working on it, be patient). The current version of the game is more advanced that video preview loaded in youtube.

More music, more FX... more, more, more and less free memory, hehehehehe.

And only spanish and english versions (by the moment  ;) ).

ZilogZ80a and me are talking about releasing a 128K version with some extras and improvements but, by the moment, only 64K version will be released.

And yes, CAT'art will be there too on disk version (ZilogZ80a is working on it).

Cheers.

Yes... fixed screen (no scrolling) and mostly exploration, just jumping, collect items.
This game will be perfect as a Christmas release... hurry up, just 1 month remaining. ;)

(Forget about a french version, English and Spanish are more than enough for any french to understand, it's not like it is a text based adventure game...)

RDIII is actually called Tomb Raider, and Rick grew a big pair in the process. ;)

BTW, I re-read the post from the developer.

ZilogZ80a...

I guess it is nice to try to put a nice game for a Tape CPC464... but I also guess it must be more than frustrating.

While the spectrum version is obviously Speccy48... is a Speccy128 version in development ?
What are the specification for the MSX version ? is this a 64k version too ?

If you really want to have sweet pictures during the menu, cinematic screens and storytelling, you should keep this for 128k versions instead of trying too hard to avoid "multiloading for tapes"

Most average CPC users do have access to a 6128 unit.
And most actually serious 464 only users (how can it be serious guys ?) may have Disk drive or Ram extension anyway.

Same for Speccy, i guess the amstrad produced speccy+2 are more than common amongst the collectionners.
And most MSX avid fans may have extra RAM and MSX2 specs at least, the problem for the MSX version could even be solved with a caretridge version i guess.

BTW I like this Spanish approach to give "crossdev" versions for those three Z80 computers ranges (and also C64 as well).
I like it when a game manage to be great on all those 8 bit systems... think about Barbairan (palace soft) whio was great on every released system...

What about the Enterprise64/128 ?
I guess it could be quite easy to do a straight Amstrad port on this system*, which could be fun an open an eastern European market... ;)

*of course some slight graphical edition of the tileset/sprites in order to take account of the sweet nice enterprise64/128 colour palette would be sweet too...

And please be kind to perhaps also do some Amstrad PLUS special features if you aim at a 128k version.
I mean, better palette, the main player sprite in High resolution (Hardsprite)... many things could happen while still being easy implementations. :)

What about the Enterprise64/128 ?
I was thinking about an enterprise 64 version of one of my work-in-progress games, but it would come last after cpc, plus and pcw.

The "problem" is in 16-colour mode, you can freely choose the r,g,b of the first 8 colours. The next 8 colours are calculated using it's "fixbias" register. So it's not quite as easy as cpc for colour selection for your pens.

Title: Re: Teodoro No Sabe Volar - preview
Post by: MacDeath on 19:07, 21 November 12
Well, it then mostly means you must wisely re-assign most inks in order to account for this enterprise limitation, but I guess this can be more triky as it seems...

Still to port on the enterprise quite straightly from the CPC is fairly do-able, but i guess it would need some support from the active Enterprise community, and here the language barrier must be quite strong. ::)

I gues if you can only provide them a sourcecode and chat a few time, they would be happy to do it, I mean, they are some kind of "cousins" to the Speccy/CPC community after all and they have experience for that.

nice MSX graphic.
sweet avoidance of attribute clashes.
And nice cartoonish style.

Can't wait for the CPC proper release.

I was one of the founding partners of NEW FRONTIER back in the 80s.

Since about 10 years ago made a didactic work, teaching people how to make video games for MSX in Assembler. creating a chapters. Besides creating a platform game with high quality and all its open source code and with many comments.

Although this is my first game for Amstrad game level has great quality and speed of fact I have to stop it to make it more playable. plus lots of gaming experience.

64kb uses this game, but the double-screen hardware, 1 screen in # 8000 and 2 screen in #C000  that lets me 32Kb of RAM, since each screen consumes 16kb. By creating a smaller screen size I have a few blocks of 512kb. for use.

But still, the whole game with their music-sfxs. Besides including the game's history and the history of the end of the game. for 464 without multi-load.

The MSX version is for MSX1 or higher and occupies only 32kB of ROM will be done with physical distribution in cartridge.

The version for the CPC 6128 will occur in 3" disks and incorporated improvements to provide more space for code and graphics.

I'm also helping in the realization of the Commodore 64 version

About a 128K version, like I said on the CPC Rulez french forum, I though it was better to make a next episode (Teodoro now sabe volar!) using full capabilities :
- double buffer display
- more tiles and sprite variety
- some environement tunes (not only one music)
- 8 keys to find
- better moves
...

This 64K version is so promising, than only patching it for 128K stuff will be a shame. ;)

I've got to have enough space to have the story start and end of the game.

Today I finished incorporate English language version.

There is only a few CHRs end graphics missing in the stories and the graphic designer has to send me DaDMaN.

And with that the game will be completely finished and can be run on a CPC 464.

After that will come a slightly improved version and disk for CPC 6128.

I've compiled a special version for CPC WIKI including 16 screens, so if you ever go crazy screen the game already know it happens.

Almost everyone prefers that the protagonist moves fast, but after trying it I'd love to hear your feedback.

A greeting.

The key options for the game are these three, depending on what we click on the menu of the game.

1-keys OPQA + space
2-Cursor + Space
3-Joystick + Button1

Top job, sir! It plays infinitely better than the Speccy version! ^_^

For those having trouble jumping, the trick is to press (and hold for more height) jump and then move left or right.
A good example of using the hold jump button is when going for the coins on the second screen (at the top) as you have to jump across a number of gaps to get to them! (You need the jump power-ups first, of course!)

Also, once you've got the YELLOW chains broken, collected the coins and gone up the ladder of spikes, the game WILL crash... but it's only a preview, so no bother there! If anyone is stuck, here's a map (attached below)!

Can't wait to see the full version released!

Oh yes, it looks really great!!!! I might just print out that map screenshot and put it up here at work...

Btw, one suggestion: it always bothered me in games where you would jump upwards to enter a screen higher than the one you are now, the game flicks (with the necessary delay) to the higher screen and then the process is repeated while you go down again. Like it happens in the 2,2 (counting from top left) screen if you jump to 2,1. Can it be done so that the game checks where you're going to land so it doesn't flick screens all the time?

Isn't there a snapshot file in previous ZilogZ80a post ? ;)

Sad: Its a snapshot type 3 and crunched... ;) So not many emulators support it...

But the result is really cool!

Fantastic job with the graphics – I didn’t think MODE 0 could look this good!

It has little to end the Amstrad version, probably will be available for download in January 2013.

Meanwhile competition has been brought to MSXDEV'12 the MSX version, which is available for download and play in real machine & emulators.

I attached the link.

As the year has changed, also the state of Teodoro.

I've posted on my blog, but also I write here.

Finally Teodoro no sabe volar is finished and ready to be loaded from tape into our computers Amstrad or their emulators.
Soon be available to load from Web RetroWorks or Dimension Z.

And right now we will start with print and duplicate tapes.

Happy New Year 2013

I just downloaded and tested the full version. Awesome!

What's not to like? It has a nice tune, cute little sprites, wonderful graphics, is hard as hell (to me), and a  nice looking, individual tape loader. And it picks just the right strings in me to make me feel nostalgic. :)
