Title: Amstrad locations map
Post by: Fran123 on 18:11, 21 December 22
Hi all!

We want to create a map with the location of the old Amstrad CPC computers.
We needn't the exact location, knowing the city is enough for us.
Optionally, you can enter the nickname you use on Amstrad's social networks.
We do not store your email address.
When we have a significant number of responses we will publish a map.

The link where you can participate is  https://forms.gle/HTTyki8MUEoXwbms5

We prefer the location on geodetic coordinates format that you can get in https://www.openstreetmap.org/ (search your city, double click and share, then you can see the coordinate below "Geo URI" label.

For example, for Paris is 33.6706,-95.5442

Thanks you

How are you going to keep this informations up-to-date?

Btw. I think if one can choose a 472 it should also be possible to be a 464 Plus oder 6128 Plus owner. :-)

But what will happen if I move home? How could the location be changed and how do you verify, that it's really me (and not anybody else) changing my location?

I already made my entry, btw. :-)

Oh -hahaha, how's the weather over there mate? :D

I thought it had you in the sea near the actual location!

This reminded me of that one time I was trying to convince PowerBI to give me a map of our client list, and it got it mostly correct except that there were quite a few customers in the Peruvian Andes :D

Couple of minor suggestions:

Get rid of the entries with blank nicknames, and don't let them be entered on the update page.

And do a bit of validation on the lat/long values before storing them - Tom et Jerry's entry is invalid and throws an error in the js console, stopping any entries after it from being displayed...

Thank you

I have to validate the coordinates, I realized later, but it's solved.

I think the nickname must be optional, there may be users who do not want to say which equipment they have.
That people can contribute to the map. In case the nickname were mandatory they could fill any word.
The target is a cpc map, not users.

Except you use the nickname as a key for updating entries. Can't do that unless it's unique. And there's no way to manage duplicates.

Instead you could include a checkbox for "be anonymous". The nickname is still stored but it's replaced with '' when generating the map data.

You are right. It is not possible two equal nicknames. I'm going to add a password for the purpose of avoid to other people modify the register, and a field "visible"

No, that was not meant to judge you as a developer, just more of a tongue-in-cheek hint towards my impression that this map was kind of a iteratively evolving group effort - which is great! :)

No New Zealand owners on the map yet? I know they're out there...

And good on Amstrad for releasing the CPC down here. They seemed to do pretty well, too. I don't think they bothered with the Plus though.

I had used the CPM MEX.COM for a few years and though it did the job it was generic and did not use the 6128 to full advantage.
BBS Terminal V5.04/AnsiTerm was a giant leap in terms of functionality and ease of use - in fact it was the main reason I was still using the 6128 up to 98 or 99.
