Anyone seen the film? They are now doing a series where people get in touch about people from the internet who they want to meet. Not one yet has been who they say they are. Scary stuff.
Who would have a relationship (2 years in one case) with someone online who you never skyped with or met and only has a handful of photographs ?
No idea what you're talking about! :D
Just read the wikipedia entry, interesting, though probably a fake.
But hey, people always did weird and freaky stuff, the internet is just another medium to express your mental incapacity...
Watch this, its the series that are the good ones. The film was actually good too.
CATFISH: THE TV SHOW TRAILER - YouTube (http://youtu.be/CMA4x7aXJT0)
A wonderful way to waste time ...
I've watched a couple makes you realise how many fake people there are on the internet :o
They must be all on Facebook (I don't need social media, prefer real life ,-)
I have facebook but only have people who I actually know and meet in real life i.e. friends or family  with exception to one person, who is highly unlikely to be a nut case (I hope  ).

THIS IS social media ;)
But it's so much fun :) About 5 years ago my mate set up a fake account pretending to be a really hot 18 year old Asian girl (and got me and a few other people to befriend her to give her some validity) so we could wind up my other mate before the three of us met up in Australia. What we didn't count on was the number of wierdos who got in contact wanting to marry her (him)
Actually you gus do remember we had a fake member here, right?
Right.
So, lynwen, I think you're safe as long as you take a good look outside your house every time you go out or in.
Also, THANK YOU, I've been saying that for ages - this IS a social medium, as was the BBS I was phoning into back in the early nineties. Social media didn't start with MySpace, damnit!

Way to make me feel more paranoid ??? haha! Would take a very sad and lonely person with nothing better to do to go all stalky on me.

Wow your mate sounds like an idiot. What a waste of time and energy that could have been put to doing something constructive.
Seriously guys, its REAL people on the other end of that keyboard and monitor, why treat it any differently. ::)
Real people?! Are you talking about Users? I'm a damn ISO (always hiding from CLUs villains).

Am I sad for knowing what you are on about  .....
Why am I a weirdo if I hit on a hot 18yo Asian girl? I think it'd be weird if I didn't!
I actually watched part of an episode of this last night on MTV and it was a train wreck in slow motion partly filmed on a digital camera. Average Joe meets a really attractive fit blond girl who turns out to be a large brunette with self confidence issues who cuts herself. I don't know, felt like everyone was just being exploited for some cheap TV... at least offer the poor lass some counselling to try to get to the root of the problem.

Listen to yourself, all right? You met a "cool guy" on the Internet? This is how these sexual predators work. Next thing you know he's gonna want to arrange a meeting, where he will gas you, stuff you in the back of his van and make a wind chime out of your genitals." - EuroTrip
I take your point though about it being real people at the other end and people who send malicious tweats like to the diver Tom Daley saying you let your dead dad down deserve all they get. Still, nothing wrong with winding up your best mate who you've known for over 30 years since you started school.

We watched this last night too, totally agree they should offer help and support to both parties. Poor girl :(
Also poor guy being lied to for over a year, and it was really sweet that he was still interested even after finding out she wasn't the person in the photographs.
They were both nice people just both had issues to do with confidence and self esteem. That episode had a nice ending...
Its the episode the other week that was awful. A woman pretended to be a bloke for TWO YEARS. She spent all her time being this dude all just so that the other woman wouldn't steal her man, who she "stole" from the other woman when he was sleeping with both of them at the same time.
I just simply wouldnt have the time, energy or inclination to do something like that. All over a cheating guy too :o

I can't believe I'm actually reading all this.

Yes.
Cradle snatcher comes to mind
Oh and I don't think your woman would approve
You're making it sound like I'm some 70yo perv who lures 13yo girls in with candy. Cradle snatcher, pfft! (had to google that, btw).
One of the reasons I love my girl is she's understanding (as in, she won't scratch my eyes out the minute I lay them on said 18yo Asian hottie).
hahahahaha!

It was a sarcastic joke ;)
Yeah, that's the definition I saw, too :)
I've met several people who are members of the Wiki Forum and they all turned out to be who they claimed they were. Now I'm not sure if I should be glad or disappointed. Due to the fact that they all claimed to be middle age men interested in retro computers, I thought at least one of them might turn out to be a hot 18yo babe! Or does it only happen in the other direction? ::)
Bryce.
Middle age? nah, thanks, not me! :)
Then, can we refer to you as 'Old Man'?
Sounds cool!
Example:
QuoteHey, Old Man, there's something not working in the Wiki!
:D
"O Wise One" would be nice, thankyouverymuch.
"Catfishing" was on the BBC radio news this morning. The victim being a woman who was introduced to a guy via facebook by her best friend in real life. They chatted online, texted and PHONED each other. Each time they tried to meet, the guy would make last minute excuse.
Turns out it was the best friend the whole time, using a voice changer on her mobile when chatting on the phone.
This relationship went on for over a year.
Each time the woman was going to call it quits, her best friend egged her on saying he was a brilliant guy and was worth it
Transpires that the best friend who is no longer the womans best friend loved the power of being in control.
Catfishing is NOT normal behaviour!!!
Define normal.
One thing is normal, another is agreeable/acceptable. Meanness is pretty normal I'd say.
