2D tank games: Do you know a good 1p, top down game where you control a tank?

I'm in the mood for a nice 1 player, overhead tank game. It could be for the CPC or for any other machine, even modern games. Do you know any good ones?

There appears to be a variant I would call "pac-tank" games, where you control a tank in a maze. Not exactly what I'm looking for, even if some are very fun and even include a "defend the base" approach.

Not exactly what you're looking for, but in "Ikari Warrior" you play mostly a soldier (one or two players are possible) and in some areas you can control a tank. See screenshots e.g. on http://www.retrocastaway.com/retro-gaming/ikari-warriors-on-the-amstrad-cpc/ .

One of the nice things is that when you're controlling a tank, incoming bullets are not an issue any more.
Had a CPC since 1985, currently software dev professional, including embedded systems.

I made in 2013 the first CPC cross-dev environment that auto-installs C compiler and tools: cpc-dev-tool-chain: a portable toolchain for C/ASM development targetting CPC, later forked into CPCTelera.

When asked for a tank game, immediately the arcade game Assault comes to my mind. It is not controlled by a single joystick, but by two to independently set the speed and direction for the left and right chain. This allows to rotate in small curves or even in place. Also the tank allows to somehow roll sidewards to avoid enemy fire.

Porting this to CPC could be a bit challenging. ;)

Haha, holy shirt, that Assault game is totally crazy (especially for 1988). It gets close to what I want, but arcade games are a bit too stressful for me.

In other forums, they have recommended me the computer game Bolo (1983, has a DOS version):

And ANOTHER tank game called Bolo (1989, has a Windows version):

I really want to try the second one, let's see how I manage to do that.

EDIT: Damn, the second Bolo is a strictly deathmatch game.

In other forum, someone recommended this game (which was ported to multiple 8 bit comptuers including the CPC in mode 0):

Not really a tank game, but a good idea badly implemented. Pushing other vehicles down a cliff is always fun, but not this strange way.

I think I'm going to play Kondor (indie MS-DOS game from 1999) to the end. This one is not even in Mobygames:

It gets dangerously close to what I want, but it's a shame you have this big, boring map instead of advancing through interesting buildings.

I just discovered 2 interesting 8 bit 2D tank games:

1) A nice CPC game created for the 2019 game contest by 3 local Spanish students. It's 1 to 4 players and the interesting variation here is that it uses only 2 buttons, as the tanks are constantly rotating:

2) An interesting puzzle-tank game called Rebel, released for the C64 and the ZX Spectrum (the ZX Spectrum seems to remove all enemies making the game much easier and relaxing!):

As mentioned above, the best tank game is Ikari Warriors although it's a part of the game.
Try Turbo Tanks Redux DX on the PC. It's also a Gauntlet clone.

I liked the option of getting into a tank in the game Commando.

This is possible in Ikari Warriors. Which is better than Commando in all aspects but the music. (Commando music is the best though.)

Quite an early release, but I actually really enjoyed this Astro Attack, and don't try to tell me they aren't tanks. :D

Currently playing on: 2xCPC464, 1xCPC6128, 1x464Plus, 1x6128Plus, 2xGX4000. M4 board, ZMem 1MB and still forever playing Bruce Lee.
No cheats, snapshots or emulation. I play my games as they're intended to be played. What about you?

I also thought of this gem (It's kind of an arcade conversion where the original arcade cabinet does not exist - I would have loved to play this on a real cabinet)

However, this probably qualifies as a "pac-tank game" which cwpab is not looking for.

Nah, pac-tank games are fine. Because 99% of the other overhead tank games go full war and kind of stress me a bit. Problem with pac-tanks is they're often a clone of the Namco Battle City game, and I don't like defending my base. I want to attack!

No base needs to be defended in Astro Attack you'll be happy to know.
All you have to do is blast everyone else away. :D

I just discovered the cute little tank game Armored, released in 2021 for the ZX Spectrum:

I love how it looks like it's one of these text-based action games for the MS-DOS, but sadly it's a bit too strategic for me (limited ammo, can't carry more than one keycard)... But perhaps some of you want to give it a try. I like how the enemies try to shoot you dangerously as you pass through them, and how open the sceneries are.
