Hi all

I've seen this video on youtube:

There is an arkanoid clone on development for symbos, on a msx turbo-r it look very cool, but i don't know how will be displayed on a cpc (if it runs)...

arnoldemu

@Trebmint : Is this a game you made using your sym studio? Looks nice. How does the CPC version run?

Definately runs on a CPC, and its altered a little over the past week with a new theme. Want it to be a cool game for symbos, and a demo for what symstudio can do.

Working on the MSX first, and will downgrade to 4 colours manually as you get better results that way.

Hopefully should be appearing soon.

Nice demo, TorboR is basically more of a 16 bit computer than good old 8bit from 1984 indeed...

It's not better than a CPC. The Z80 runs more quick and it has other GFX mode. But the CPC has definitely it's advantages too. I wouldn't switch ;-)

I'd say technically its far better than the CPC TBH, but then a modern PC is 1000x more powerful than a Turbo-R.... Not actually the point.

The thing with symbos is that this will run on the CPC, regular MSX and PcW too. Symbos isnt geared for games, and it never going to get amazing 50fps arcade action running in a window while multitasking other apps, but we can write some pretty good stuff none the less.

The guy released that vid as he wants to show off the systems running at its best, but he's also done a video running on a standard MSX and it looks identical if a little slower. Dont worry the speed thing is now even across systems.

Iagree... but then again the Turbo R is not a CPC  :P

SymbOS is a great technical achievement and I would wish the CPC community would participate more active in creating stuff for SymbOS. I hope this will change when the new SymStudio is released  ;D

Hello CPC Z80 lovers!! Here my first post!

In this movie I showed indeed the Turbo-r ;) As it is for me the best 8 bit computer ;)
But you can see in the movie that I moved the camera angle to an other 'normal MSX2' machine :D
The speed is compared to the CPC! The cool thing is that Symbos makes it compatible for the CPC as well. Like Tetris that is also working on the CPC :)
In Tetris there is a 'special' routine to the detect the screen resolution and adapts the form layout as well !!

How much memory, in k, in a CPC464? hhmmmmmm 64 ? not sure lets try  ;)

Gryzor

This looks awesome...

I only think the ball should be smaller than that.

Oh, and while I was typing - welcome, @Edoz(MSX) !

I hope that changes too, and I think it will. Without making Prodatron sound like a coding genius he's added new graphics stuff in 2.1 (Which isnt being used in symstudio yet) which will take App/Game functionality up another level.  If you add that to easy access to large memory, Hard Drive storage and potential network ability then you have a cpc game creators wet dream.
Unify will let you create super fast apps with media super quick too. People wont be able to resist symbos devving surely! haha

BDW: In this movie:

the batt is working as well! Thanks to Trebmint again  ;)

Just remove the "s" from YouTube's "https" URLs and you can embed the vids here, like so:

I really like these videos! :)
It still looks fine on the CPC in 4 colour mode. Yesterday I tried it on the Joyce PCW, and even there it runs without problems, everything is still visible in 2 colour mode.

Bit worrying how the ball sometimes disappears in that last video when it approaches the top left of the play area but overall a very nice looking Arkanoid clone (far better than the official Nintendo DS mess too).
Favorite CPC games: Count Duckula 3, Oh Mummy Returns, RoboCop Resurrection, Tankbusters Afterlife

I just got a PCW16 (well, it's on its way). I'd love to see a symbos port to this machine - especially if the extra hardware could be supported:

16MHz Z80
1MB RAM expandable to 2MB
IDE controller
Colour output (on VGA connector) with "better" modes than CPC

Just needs some kind of audio expansion...

Don't forget that on the movie (on the MSX2) I was playing a MP3 file and running Tetris at the same time! If you close all other applications it runs very well on 3.5 Mhz.. of course there is still some improvements needed ;)

Would be a fantastic platform, but I am afraid that it's too rare, isn't it? Where did you get yours? :) I checked the whole hardware specs some years ago, wouldn't be a problem, as it's still nice Amstrad like.

@Carnivac: It's still very beta and buggy, I am sure they will fix these issues.

They come up occasionally on ebay, I've been after one for a while and was recently lucky and got a very good price.  Can't help wondering if you might find the asic for it available somewhere as you could then reproduce it easily enough as all the other parts are standard. Anyway, the turbo r isn't exactly common and that has a port, so if I see another pcw16 I'll send it your way and maybe we can get a symbos port?! :)

That's the important point :-) And this feature it shares only with CP/M. But of course this is like to compare MSDOS and Windows ;-)

I'm looking forward to see a CPC version too :-) Finally it pays off and CPC has some input from other platforms :-)

btw.: If would be kinda amazing to make a cross-platform battle: CPC vs. Turbo R (but the CPC is allowed to use RAM, ROM expansions and PlayCity  ).

Will there be a version for a plain CPC too? Does it need 128 KB?

Symbos requires 128k... I clearly made a mistake in supporting symbos and not futureos

Prodatron

Great progress! It already makes fun to play it in this state :)

No, as it's a SymStudio/Unity application and therefore completely platform independent as it uses the SymbOS API. The whole graphic output is based on the Desktop Manager, as well as the memory management is based on the kernel of SymbOS. Creating an Amsdos version would mean creating another program, which doesn't make any sense in this case.
Regarding 128K: Everyone owns an X-MEM today! :P

::)  Can't you be serious? I did ask about the game. I'm curious how much memory it needs. Also if it uses some special features of SymbOS or if it *could* run in principle on a plain CPC.

Thanks. That was the answer I did ask for. Very interesting.  :)
