Neo Geo, four bright buttons two joysticks...

So now that I've finished MrLou's 464+ Mod and Beakers SG-1000 mods, it was time to do something for ME! :)

I've had this Neo Geo MVS board lying about for almost a year, just begging to be connected up, so I decided to consolize it. Consolize might be the wrong word, let's just say "I put it in a box" :D
For the Neo Geo nerds among us. It's a non-modified MV-1FZ, single slot and the smallest MVS footprint that was produced. It only has a Jamma connector, no joystick or other connectors. I haven't done any of the known mods either, like Stereo or 5V Mod.

So I made a kind of "bar-top" device, but for use in front of a TV. It has an S-Video output using the same RGB to S-Video circuit that I published in the Wiki for the CPC. My original plan was to use SCART, but it refused to sync properly on any TV I could try it on :( I didn't want the box to be too big, so it only has the controls for one player, but I added a 15pin socket on the back to connect a Neo Geo AES joystick (such as the "Kidney Bean" seen below). Other than that it just has the power socket. Because S-Video doesn't carry the sound signal, I had to install a small speaker inside too. I intend to upgrade it to HDMI later which will also carry Stereo sound, later when I have time. I'll clean up the woodwork later this week, then I intend painting it high-gloss black and adding some red-white stripped stickers like the arcade cabinet :)

So here's some pictures:
This might be a good time to mention, that wood really isn't my element. I'm much happier working with plastic or metal.

That is soooo selfish  :D

But very cool, looks great.

Love it in the wooden box, nice job  :)

I'm just starting to realise that the Neo Geo is productivities anti-matter!  :o

There goes any chance of me getting anything meaningful done for the foreseeable future :D

Some great games to choose from matey - used to love the likes of Ghost Pilots, Metal Slug, Blazing Star, Strikers, Last Resort, Shock Troopers, Nam 1975 to name a few...  :D

Nice rug - Laura Ashley?

Heh, nice work on the case, lovely bit of wood, and really solid looking.

Probably. No idea. I just give the wife the credit card, she does the choosing and buying :D

I guessed it needs to be able to take a serious beating, so I went for "seriously robust". Not being a carpenter or anything close to it, I went for big ugly screws to hold it all together, but they won't be visible after it's all been painted.

Can't wait for you to get bored of it :D

A really favorite platform of mine, the NG (well, alongside only with CPC and GC). This is a lovely construction, you could even add some lead in it to make it heavier and keep it down (wait, can you still get lead in any quantities?).

I would suggest going not for a high-gloss finish but a matte one, unless you can find an anti-fingerprint lacquer. Otherwise, better add a holder for a wiping piece of cloth :)

The black paint is actually matt, but I intend to coat it with clear varnish (over the stickers too) to protect against chipping/pealing and this is what would give it the High-gloss look.

I can get lead in handy 9mm portions in my local gun shop, but I don't think it needs extra weight. I deliberately used very light wood to keep the weight down. When you play it, both arms rest on the top, so it's not really going to go anywhere.

I'll let you know when I get bored of it. Probably sometime around two thousand and never, or at the end of the next Mayan calendar, which ever comes first.

Wow, how did you merge your own eyes onto a picture of a cat? :D
