Title: MegaFlash equivalent for the C64?
Post by: mr_lou on 19:45, 24 September 13
Like we fortunate CPC owners have the MegaFlash available for our machines, I was wondering if there exists anything similar for the C64.

If so, what is it called, where do I get it, and how does one start programmes with it?  :)

Aah, right, The EasyFlash. I've heard of that actually, just forgot again.
Thanks. I'll look into that.

Looking a bit into the EasyFlash, it appears to only allow for one CRT file at a time.

I.e. you write a CRT file. Then you can play that one. But if you want to play another CRT file, you have to write that one. There can only be one cartridge image stored at a time it seems.

But then there's the new EasyFlash 3 which allows for 7 cartridge images to be stored + additional 8 kernel files. So that seems to be best option for the C64.

Yes, the EasyFlash 3 is a big improvement over the original, but it also costs quite a bit more.

The Easyflash works well and it is easy to make a CRT compilation with multiple games or use one of the many already made up.

[CSDb] - Search for 'easyflash' (http://csdb.dk/search/?seinsel=releases&search=easyflash&all=1)

You are only really limited by the 1MB flash limit.

As an example, you create a menu that fires up when the C64 is powered on (with the EasyFlash cart inserted).

Select your game and your done...

Cheers,
Shane

The AtariMAX cartridge is similar, and you can also create a compilation of games with a menu.

Quite handy!

A menu is also no problem for the CPC.

[ot]Although the c64 wiki is older than the CPCwiki, and of course the c64 scene is much larger, the c64 wiki has had 600.000 visits, less than half those of CPCWiki :)[/ot]

Unfortunately, the C64 Wiki isn't nearly as well filled with info or as active as the CPCWiki. There are much better C64 resources on the net, whereas the CPCWiki is definitely the forerunner in the CPC scene.

No, I get it, and it's true; however I would have expected more...

I use a 1541 Ultimate cartridge on my C64. For my money it's the best of breed and far more than just another SD card reader. It fully emulates a 1541 disk drive and via a serial connector that plugs into the back of the C64. So you have near 100% compatibility.

You can also load in TAP games and the device can even play the TAP files in the tape port as if it was a real tape.

For my money it's the best expansion of it's kind for any 8 bit.

Only downsides are that it isn't cheap and the guy only does limited production runs so you may have a wait (mine took about 2 months to arrive)

I have no connection with the product other than being an absolutely delighted user.

Any 8 bit?  ???

130 Euros.... that's quit a bit... However it can't beat the HxC Floppy Emulator. :)

Yep. It's a wonderful package with fantastic attention to detail. Even the cartridge itself has beens styled to look like it comes from the mid 80's, yet underneath there is so much power. Just to handle it is a joy. It looks and feels like a high end device from back in the day. Many of the SD card solutions I have for my other computers feel homebuilt or require effort to get them working. The 1541 Ultimate just plugs into the cartridge port and you are away. No mess either.

As I say you have the option to load data directly into memory via the cartridge port or you can plug into the disk or tape sockets for exact emulation of a 1541 unit or a Commodore Tape recorder. It supports USB memory sticks as well if you quickly want to get a file onto the computer without wanting to use the SD card.

It also has a number of popular expansion cartridges built in including the Action Replay. In CPC terms this is like having a Multiface.

Expensive, yes, but so is a Ferrari.

I might get an HxC for my +3 at some stage but the 1541 Ultimate was a "must have" as soon as I saw the specs. It's great!
