Title: Sound to Light Software.
Post by: Bryce on 08:49, 18 July 12
Hi all,
I was talking to and old Atari XL friend of mine last night and he reminded me of a program we used to use. As far as we can remember, it was called "Lightspace". It created demo-like visual effects on the screen and could even sync them to music (Sound-to-light) if you connected the sound source to the joystick port.

Do any other Atari XL/XE fans remember this? Was it really called Lightspace? And does anyone know where I can find it?

Bryce.

Could it be Colourspace (http://atari.fandal.cz/detail.php?files_id=180) of Jeff Minter??? Sound very Minteresque :P

No mention of it anywhere so probably he remembers wrong. I also tried looking with other terms but found nothing.

Well, except for this, of course:
Atari Video Music and Modular Synthesizer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EbrQ_FygdHA#)

And it's '76 all over again! I'd love one of these...

Ah, Colourspace is well known. Does my memory deceive me or was something available for the CPC as well?

In any case, Minter also did the XBox visualizer as well, no?

Is this what you're thinking of?

It was indeed Jeff Minters Colourspace. When doing "real work" on my CPC I used to leave this running on my 800XL while playing my favourite tunes of the time.

Thanks all,
Bryce.

Ahhh yes, Psychedelia! It's really nice, actually.

Never seen Colourspace running on a real machine, must look great indeed. The effect back then must have been very futuristic.

I was just reading up on Jeff Minter and Llamasoft. He's still making software and it's still pretty Psychedelic. Check out Space Giraffe for the XBox 360 on Youtube (not suitable for people with epilepsy). He obviously hasn't come down off that last acid trip just yet :D

Jeff always will be Jeff  ;D It's a shame that we don't have more of his games in the CPC  ;)

I did! And it's like playing Tempest on CPC and using some LSD at the same time. :P

I still play Tempest 2000 (Jaguar version) everytime I'm visiting the RCM HQ ;-)

Space Giraffe was one of my first XBL purchases (along with Jetpac) but they're rarely played these days. Never play music CDs either via the 360 so Jeff's "modern" work is not seen that much.

Space Giraffe was my *first* buy on XBL. Fantastic game... you need to sit close to your tv. Even spectators enjoy it!
