Title: To Be This Good Takes Ages! SEGA TOPIC
Post by: ukmarkh on 16:58, 11 May 10
The Master System and The Megadrive were cool consoles... the Megadrive has a warm place in my heart.

Strider - Megadrive / Amazing game, everyone must play
Stargate - Megadrive / Side action scroller at its best
ThunderForce 3 & 4 - Megadrive / Simply amazing stuff

More to follow...

Wiz'n'Liz. A fantastic, if little-known, game.

Maybe a bit late for this topic, but I also found my old japanese megadrive, with a bunch of cartridges (in various conditions), at the same time I found my old CPC, while helping my dad clean out his shed. I haven't plugged it in, or even thought about it, but I did drag it back to my place. I might try it once I get my CPC working, but it doesn't seem to have the same appeal to me as my CPC.

I agree that consoles don't have the same appeal as retro computers, they're just not so hands on.

I loved the Snes, but got into it late - when I was a poor student me and my mates used to buy old consoles for a couple of quid along with games for a pound.  I played the Snes to death (Zelda, Mario Kart etc)... but I was sooooo disappointed when I jailbreaked my Wii to put a Snes emulator on it, just didn't have the same appeal.  Maybe it was the 32" LCD TV that did it, you can't beat a 19" CRT TV for the old consoles  :D

I used to like Sonic 1 and 2 and Cannon Fodder on the Mega Drive but besides those, the console didn't appeal to me. Games on the SNES were far superior, after all it has Super Mario World, Kart, All-Stars, SF2 for ages before the MD, Super Bomberman, Donkey Kong Country, the list goes on.

Rolling Thunder 2!!! Superb game and the music is just fantastic!
I also enjoyed Gunstar Heroes. Both of these I have, but Rolling Thunder 2 gets more play time.

I still play my Dreamcast now. I'm still discovering great games for it. I played Red Dog for the first time last weekend.

I personally DO love everything related to Sega before 2002.

I have :
- Sega Game Gear (with the adapter to replay MasterSystem games)
- Sega Genesis + Sega CD + Sega 32x
- Sega Nomad (handled Genesis, just awesome)
- Sega Saturn (+modchip)
- Sega Dreamcast

I have all the major CD games (backups) and original games for Genesis/GameGear/32X (50+ games).

I ** DO ENJOY A LOT ** these 2 Genesis games :
- Batman & Robin (music by Jesper Kyd, very technical game), please watch this video : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sf8o2xqUbBY (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sf8o2xqUbBY)
- Mega Turrican (music by Chris Huelsbeck), watch this video : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LKZhJdVfM7k (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LKZhJdVfM7k)

I also have NeoGeo CD, Amiga CD 32, and Amiga 600 (with tons of WHDLoad games).
And 2 CPCs... and 1 Xbox... and 1 PSP... arg.

(ps. Nintendo sucks, it's a fact!)

I have a Saturn, with half a dozen games, that I never thought were that great. Luckily I bought it second hand.

I've never seen a Dreamcast in real life, and I don't know anybody who   actually bought one. Which seems like a real shame when I read about how   great they are. It seems like anybody who used one thought they were   brilliant.

I would say that I was a Sega fan, although there were plenty of times I wished I had a SNES instead of a Megadrive.

Seriously. I assume that I had been in shops selling them, but they were   never displayed or advertised a way that made me notice them. It was competing with xbox/ps2, right? Or ps1 era?

I've still got my Japanese sega saturn and a Japanese dreamcast but not many games left for either of them:

Sega Saturn: Radiant Silvergun, Battle Garrega, Streetfighter Alpha 3 and Elevator Action Returns. These are my favourite saturn games.
Favourite Dreamcast was Space Channel 5 part and 2 and Jet set radio. I think I'm going to buy these again...

With my brother we have a MegaDrive, a Saturn and a Dreamcast.

Saturn was quite unexploited because a commercial flop.
Was actually the best 2D console ever... as powerfull as an Arcade cabinet...
Streetfighter like games were awesome (nightstlkers per exemple) and I remember the Bomberman was great.

Dreamcast is clearly one of the best console ever.

PanzerDragoon is awesome, also Soulcalibur...
I also remember the awesomness of Powerstone (a beat'them up game with 4 player possible)

Megadrive...  not that bad, but it aged not that well.
Graphics were quite disapointing sometimes... cetainly due to the 512 only colours (same as Atari ST) and sounds are not that good too.
But it is a decent game console of course as it was a downgraded Arcade machine...

EarthwormJim is so great.

Re: Dreamcast, Puyo Puyo fever is one of the greatest (but largely forgotten and lesser-known) two-player games. The mechanics are amazingly well-balanced and it's very fun...

I also enjoy a lot Marvel vs. Capcom 2 on Sega Saturn (which requires 4Mb of RAM)

I love the Megadrive, and still use mine on a regular basis. I enjoy the Master System, but the missus enjoys that more than me. Pf course my Saturn gets a lot of use, but it's my Dreamcast that is my pride and joy. One of my favourite consoles ever.

Dreamscast was way ahead of its time and "misunderstood", it really had quality games, anyone with Dreamcast should have played the Shenmue saga, if not I strongly recommend it even using an emulator

My all time favourite game on dreamcast is Rez.

And I also think that the dreamcast is still a great machine!

Rez is probably my favorite DC game, along with Under Defeat (possibly my favorite shoot-em-up).

DC is the only console I've ever loved, even though I didn't have one at the time!

The Dreamcast had it all, except for EA Games support, one of the things that really hurted the machine asides from rampant piracy. I've never had so much fun with any other games machine besides the CPC. And the DC scene was just mindblowing.

I wish I would had bought another one when they were super-cheap. Mine works, but I had to do some "bricolage" to fix the gd-door switch problem adding an external switch. The gamepad ports also fail sometimes (loose connections), but I managed to fix it using some extension cables for the pads that seem to fit tighter.

I also bought a lot of hardware for this damned machine. Play-Asia ruled

Seriously, I'm still hardly playing all kind of Sega consoles (even the handled ones). If I feel "retro-style", then I will play Mega Turrican.. If I feel "fighting games", then I will play the Street Fighters on my Saturn/DC.. If I feel "cars gaming", then I will go with Daytona USA/F335 Challenge/VRally2.. it got everything I need for my gaming purposes.

I also have NeoGeo CD and Amiga CD32. Weirdly, I did not buy any Nintendo systems.. (only the SNES would have an interest to me, but still - ..).

Agreed. Sega should be ashamed of themselves. I can play the games with better quality on an emulator on my pc. The DC collection is out on pc too, by the way.

The Mega Drive was quite good with a lot of great games I haven't explored. I have been playing from emulator, Contra 4 (learning to play all 4 paths), Castlevania Bloodlines and of course Streets of Rage (2 is my favorite). I see that while it doesn't have a dedicated chip for rotations and zoom like the SNES, some games involve some trickery I don't know to semi-rotate big enemies/backgrounds. Lot's more tricks are there, in some games I didn't know, like the Batman link norecess gave us. I remember seeing in youtube some more impressive wolfenstein engines, hense the 68000 which is far superior than the hybrid 65oid of SNES. However, SNES was very impressive console too, with it's mode7 tricks and also superior sound and I enjoy several good games in this console too. I am also a Nintendo fan :)

The only sega console I own (because I played mega drive only from emulation, oh master system was good too from emulation I tried, some great titles Wonder Boy in Monsterland, Shinobi and others) is a Dreamcast and then a Treamcast. The Treamcast is a portable Dreamcast. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treamcast (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treamcast)

The Dreamcast was amazing but underrated. Such great variety of games. I personally remember Ikaruga and Rez. I know (but didn't found the time to play) also Shenmue 1,2. I played a bit Soul Calibour, Dead or Alive, a racing with a heavy track (wheeler?), virtual tennis, many street fighter, powerstone 1,2, and many many more I forget. The homebrew community is nice too. If I ever decide to try to write code for a console then I will consider the dreamcast.

Concerning SEGA, I was dissapointed that they requested to remove the download of Streets of Rage Remake v5.0
Why doing this now that the project is finished after eight years?

SORR is the best thing since forever! It's a remake of the originals for Windows, Linux, it would be soon for Gamepark Wiz and the Wii but I don't know now. You gotta see it. It's massive, many different levels with different paths, secret characters, extra modes, shop, it's much better than I would ever think of a remake. It has EVERYTHING and MORE!!!

The link was there http://www.bombergames.net/sorr_project/ (http://www.bombergames.net/sorr_project/) but it's down right now. The download link is removed. It might only be possible to get it from torrent. Damn!

Damn you Sega!

The modern Sega is just bouncing on its licenses since death of DC to minimize cost and risk..

MO5 is smaller than SC-3000 -though MO5 is heavier :)

Mac, I have moved to MO5E since last time we met; but after some time using it something broke inside -something related to the video output, since it is not generating a sync signal anymore. So please let me know if you find a cheap Thomson there, please! I would prefer a TO8 or TO9, of course :-D

Btw, I'm also looking for french versions of TI99 4/A and Mattel/Radofin Aquarius, the specific model with peritel output. Let me know if you find any of them, please :-D
