Personally:
Atari 2600
Sega Master System
Sega Megadrive (Genesis)
NES
SNES
Gamecube
Playstation
Playstation 2
About 250 games in total (I value quality over quantity so sell or trade games I don't like). I collect games primarily to play them ; not just for the pleasure of collecting although I can certainly understand pure 'collectors'.
Good idea!
My list:
Game gear (with MasterSystem adapter)
Sega Nomad
Sega Genesis + 32X + Sega CD
Sega Saturn
Sega Dreamcast
SNES
Amiga CD 32
NeoGeo CD
XBOX 1 (I only use it for XBMC those days..)
GBA
MicroGBA
PSP
iPod :)
C64 (+Chameleon 64)
CPC 6128 (HxC)
CPC 6128 Plus (Ramcard, HxC)
Amiga 600 (4Gb FlashCard HDD, 2Mb Fast/Chip RAM, registered WhdLoad)
How many games ? Hmm... tons. :)
Well, I must have an old NES my brother forgot at my home.
But I never really used it, I should, I bought games for it recently (Marios, Kirby, and so on)
A MegaDrive too (this one is mine).
my Amstrads PLUS may count as a GX4000 (which is more like a keyboardless/tapeless/extensionsless 464 PLUS....)
My brother does have the Sega Saturn and the Dreamcast, also Xboxes and various modern consoles...(Nintendo DS and so on)
Non consoles ?
Speccy+2 (ouch)
Atari STE 1040 and 520...
Amiga 500.
Amstrads of course (CPC and PLUS)
a few portable old PCs (486 and penthium) to get better than dosbox.
This is going to take long...

Add to that a lot of computers, CPC's of course, Ataris, Spectrums, Commodores, Acorns, Luxor, DEC, Apple... Hey, I even have two Sun Fire V480 servers! :)
Interesting topic :D
I never were into videogame consoles as a kid, they weren't popular here in spain during my childhood and 8 bit computers were the kings of videogame playing here. But time passed, and I started to earn money of my own...
My first console was a
Playstation (wich still works). I bought a few extra things for it (second controller, a memory card...) and just a few games. Then came the
Dreamcast, a little machine that gave me an insane amount of hours of fun, with games and emulators of all kind. I also bought a lot of hardware for the little white box (gamepads, adapters, a lightgun, memory cards...) and a decent amount of games. After that came the
XBOX, the black beast that got unleashed when I installed a modchip on it. I still use it with XBMC to watch all of the movies and tv series that I follow (well, it's another xbox, the first one passed away :P ). I also bought a few things for it: extra controllers, the dvd kit (very useful for xbmc), a lightgun, a dance mat, the xenium modchip, a new hard drive... ;D
As a curiosity, I took part in the beta testing of xbox live a few months before the service started to work. Microsoft sent all of the betatesters a dev kit (the ones with the green translucent shell and black logo). The machine was allowed to connect to the beta network to test the beta of a really crappy game in wich you played with R/C toy cars. I still have the game disc somewhere, the funny thing is that it only worked on the dev kit, my modchipped xbox can't read it, it says that it's a dvd-video disc. After the beta they sent us as a gift an xbox live kit (1 year of free service, a memory card and a communicator). The dev kit came with cables, a communicator and a controller S (the new model) and after the beta we only have to send back the dev kit and we could keep the rest ;D
And finally the
XBOX 360, the 60GB model with a jasper motherboard (2009). I'm really happy with it, I've also bought a load of games (more than 100) and hardware for it (online shopping in the UK, with those low prices, is really dangerous for my wallet). Also I took part in the Kinect beta test last year and got a free kinect after the beta ;D
Last Christmas I got an Xbox 360 slim to be the companion of the kinect sensor, they live happily in the living room and can be used by all the family. The white one is only mine ;D
I also have a
Neo Geo Pocket Color, I saw it super-cheap on play-asia once and bought it in a pack with 6 games. Nice little machine, it just needed to have backlight on the screen.
So:
- Playstation (first model)
- Dreamcast
- XBOX (2)
- XBOX 360 (2, fat and slim version)
- Neo Geo Pocket Color
And my old 464.

NeoGeo CD
Interesting, from the game list this looks just like a "regular" Neo Geo AES except for the different media. I've always wanted a Neo Geo console in mint condition but prices are still way up there mostly (the same for the cartridges themselves).
The ultimate for me would be owning one of these (Super Neo Geo 29 Candy cabinet):

There's a nice Acorn on Ebay at the moment (http://cgi.benl.ebay.be/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270759251874&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT#ht_946wt_1141 (http://cgi.benl.ebay.be/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270759251874&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT#ht_946wt_1141)). Funny how these markets can differ. The NES for example was extremely popular here in Belgium. From my youth I can only recall the C64 & Amiga series from 8-bit computing (non IBM compatibles) although some people (who are a couple of years older) fondly remember the ZX Spectrum. Can't really remember the CPC being around here when I was a kid...
you got to remember that as a child, you can't really go where you want nor meet whoever you like...
You are limited socially to friends at school, family relatives or perhaps a few extras Parent's friends children, perhaps if you do sport or extra scholar activities...
considering the computers were'nt as popular as now... actually rare to begin with...
the hasard can get you having only a few kind of computers available in your environment.
I for instance only saw the Atari 8 bit in magazines...
C64 wasn't that common at all in my circle.
But also you simply couldn't visit anyone at will at the time.
So perhaps one guy in the other classroom had this sweet Amstrazd CPC yet you wouldn't know it because he was of a different age from you, different class, and you weren't friends actually.

Atari 2600 - the revised slimline version in plastic box! :)
Atari 7800 - PAL Model B.
A couple of years ago I was trying to collect games for my 7800 which is rather tricky cause my 7800 relates to the region (Australia). Unsure if there's a PAL Model A, if those games from that region only work for that Model assuming it exists cause the 7800 came with a complicated encryption which died when Atari were taken over my Inforgrames and to my knowledge has prevented any software to be written for the 7800. People have instead being writing stuff for the Atari 5200 instead which is a rare console mainly due to the fact it couldn't run 2600 software, though didn't have any complicated encryption for people to worry about.

On my side I tend to buy (collect..) stuff related to my childhood. You know, as a child, I was not able to buy those stuff and kept dreaming on them.. so today it's kind of revenge to that period. Yepee! :)

I haven't bothered with consoles until I bought a GBA SP six or seven years ago. Some type of games typically ascribed to consoles I still don't play and can't get accustomed to (for example the fighting games à la Street Fighter). I was a PC games player for most of my life. Nowadays I don't play PC games at all - except the occasional nostalgia trip via DosBox.
my consoles:
GB
GBC
GBA
Nintendo DS(i)
PSP
NES
PS2
Wii
XBOX360
PS3
I intend to acquire an SNES and N64 sometime in the future.
Any new generation of consoles beyond 360 and PS3 will be under very close scrutiny before I'll buy one. I'm not too fond of the trend to online shops. I prefer the physical media, cartridges are even better.
And I'm really starting to hate these Add-Ons, especially since some are released the same day the game is sold in stores. These should have been in the game for what it's worth.
(Some of those Arcade or PSN games are really fantastic however. Shadow Complex and Trials HD comes to mind.)
QuoteI intend to acquire an SNES
Totally worth it. I acquired one 2 months ago ; and being a Sega fan I have been quite impressed with the quality of some games. Of course we know how great Street Fighter 2s are, but it's still get really fun and exciting after all those years. The console has also many treasures you can't find anywhere else.
SNES :
- excellent sound
- awesome controllers
- unique licenses
GENESIS :
- SegaCD, 32X!
- games tends to have more layered background plans than SNES allows
- unique licenses too :)

Aghh.. I also have a Wii.
I thought it was about retro.
The topic was posted in "Other retro" - "Not CPC-specific, but still retro related" :o
But then we'd need to define "retro".... In my opinion, that would include everything that's older then a decade ;-) Opinions may vary...
Anything that is not being commercialized anymore is retro for me
Retro:
Atari 2600 Jr (PAL)
Atari 2600 Jr (NTSC - AV Mod)
Atari 2600 Light Sixer (NTSC)
SpectraVideo CompuMate
Sega Dreamcast
Sega Master System II
Sony Playstation
Not retro yet:
Sony Playstation 2
Nintento Wii
The Dreamcast is getting a lot of use recently because I just got a SD Adaptor for it to load homebrew and some games from a SD card.
Also I have a Harmony Cart for the Atari 2600 to play games from the SD card but I'm still going to collect carts too. I don't have anything rare yet so not worth mentioning games.
The consoles have been taking up more time than the CPC lately but I see there is a lot happening with the CPC recently and I might be able to go online with the CPC! So I will have to get back to using the CPC more.
My ultimate definition of "retro" : Michael Jackson's career versus popularity. No joke. 1988-1993 was best for him, as it was for videogames
Still about MJ, did you know he was a complete fan of videogames ? just look at his game room : http://www.pinsane2.com/pinorama/events/MJ_09/kr/michael_jackson_arcade_entry.html (http://www.pinsane2.com/pinorama/events/MJ_09/kr/michael_jackson_arcade_entry.html)
Rah, please put me out of eBay..
I just spent 50$ on some other fighting games for the SNES ... I had all the Street Fighter 2 (in order of appearance : the classic one (92), Turbo (93), Super Street Fighter 2 (94), and Alpha 2 (96!)), and now I ordered other ports (Art Of Fighting, Fatal Fury, Samurai Shodown, World Heroes..). The reason that push me : I already own other great versions (I have a NeoGeo CD after all which contains the originals!) it's just a matter of comparison between machines..
Is there a special definition for my attitude? :-\
To conclude my monologue (it's Friday after all), don't miss the NeoGeo video clip : http://www.sasfepu.tv/video/395/NEO-GEO-Music-Video-Clip (http://www.sasfepu.tv/video/395/NEO-GEO-Music-Video-Clip)

Well I'm Glad some progress was made, someone must of tracked down and obtained the encryption algorithms for the 7800, cause I believe hackers were unable to crack it!
Most of my stuff is computers, but I have a few consoles:
Atari 2600 (was cheap, I don't even know if it works).
Sega Mega Drive
Playstation

PS3 60GB (repaired twice, now working, fingers crossed)
PS3 80GB
I've never seen a real NES or SNES except in a show.

My 2600 was cheap when I brought it (if $50 is considered cheap), I tried it out a couple of months back and was still doing just fine, considering it has had a bit of a rough life, the main issue with it is connector for the cartridge is touchy, so touching the cartridge while the unit is on is bad! :(

Bad as in the game crashes or bad as in the system is fried?
I had a rom cartridge that came with a warning not to add or remove the cartridge while the computer was switched on, a dodgy cartridge connector may have the same result.
A couple of days ago I helped my mother tidy up the closets etc in her house. I was terrified when I realised how many computers and consoles I have, they really take up lots of space...

It was merely crashing the game or when I first tried it the game wasn't loading and offering a blank screen (which was of concern). The odd part about it was it was on a game I had rarely played, cause I got so annoyed with it shortly after I got it I hardly played it. I only came back to it recently because I wanted to see if I could beat the computer, I only managed to come close.
QuoteI had a rom cartridge that came with a warning not to add or remove the cartridge while the computer was switched on, a dodgy cartridge connector may have the same result.
Yes Atari consoles were no exception to that rule and I took that rule very seriously. Though I took good care of the cartridges and console, I gave my 2600 to my Sister when I got a 7800, which in turn decided to treat it like a piece of rubbish. When I got back what was left of it was this tangled mess of wire, a console minus it's original carry box which kept it all neat and tidy and bundled away in some plastic bag all the cartridges were thrown away in that as well! >:( Fortunately the Cartridge boxes weren't thrown out - to my disgust I've seen many cartridges being sold second-hand
minus the box. I must be the only person whose kept the boxes, as dust is not good for Cartridges either!

They do take up space, which is mainly why I didn't collect other consoles since, I wasn't too impressed with SNES or Sega Mega Drive (or Genesis) cause I was having the same level of fun on my CPC6128 when them Consoles were making business. A 7800 is an interesting console to have, though didn't quite have the same level of status as an NES in terms of number of games made, though quality wise it's on par with a NES and it had Scrapyard Dog instead of Mario! ;D

Actually I Lied, Atari 7800 did have Mario Brothers & also Donkey Kong as well as Donkey Kong Jnr (as did the 2600), no Super Mario Bros though even though Mario Brothers looked a bit like the underground tunnel sequence through Super Mario...
I can only presume that Atari would not have taken up an opportunity like that, since the Atari 7800 was also released in the States which would make it in competition with itself! ;)
Does anyone have any stories about the Sega Master System and Master System II? I've always assumed both of these systems have the same system specifications, only a Master System is in a longer box and a Master System II is in a Square box. A Master System II also has the built-in game with Alex the Kidd where's I don't think you get that on the Master System. I remember the NES being done in a revised box as well though I think Nintendo were also calling it the NES, this was after Nintendo had brought out the Super Nintendo, though I don't think it really sold once the Super Nintendo was out which would make it a harder to find console unit I suppose!

Well these are the two designs of the NES I'm familiar with starting with the original:

The 2P controller has a microphone and a volume slider! (no start or select)

Well I've never seen the NES mk. 2 or knew that Famicom was short for Family Computer - learn something new etc.
