the problem arrives from not knowing if youre got a quality PSU until you test it...and the majority of them are the cheap and nasty types...

the raspberry pi had the same sorts of issues early on with their 5v power supplies... they would drop voltage when close to the power limit.. and start showing the power icon in the top right of the screen while throttling the processor.. they eventually increased the voltage of their power supplies to 5.1v to account for the drop

if you can get a hold of a bench power supply or a watt meter, or even just a ammeter, you will be able to see the current draw
you can even get cheap buck converter power supplies from the usual online stores that you could put between the wall wart and devices.. these will allow you to adjust the voltage and see the current draw, they work much nicer than the capacitive dropper wall warts...BUT you need a higher input voltage to them... (ive used 12v 1A wall wart with the buck converter inbetween set at slightly above 5v)

i havent had an issue.. one thing to note is both power supplies should have a common ground (-ve).. but im fairly sure the MX4 takes care of that...
i sometimes use a USB "charging" port that is on my 6 outlet power board, rated for 2A, on the mx4 board when using lots of addons...and 5v 2A wall wart in the same outlet board powering the cpc
ive even used a bench power supply and a PC power supply together..
..and all sorts of combinations of the above! (my 6128 sometimes has 3 different power supplies connected when ya add the 12v rail!)

If i understand correctly the project is open source, so a redesign to fit within an Amstrad case should also be possible.

No, that has nothing to do with it. It's pure ohm's law - there's too much resistance in the CPC's power bus, which inevitably creates a voltage drop proportional to the current flow. It's still 5v at the power supply, so that voltage drop results in <5V at the CPU.
If you want 5V at the CPU, you need >5V at the supply.
