I'm having some trouble with my CM14 monitor. The overall brightness seems to be down making it very difficult to see colours at the dark end of the spectrum. However, a few taps to the plastic casing around the screen make it normal again (the whole screen instantly increases in brightness including the black background). Any clues as to where the problem might lie?
Thanks.
That's a dry joint somewhere on the PCB. If you know what to look for you may be able to find it and reflow the joint.
This is what they look like.
Bryce.
Thanks. It's not something I'd tackle myself. Is that a cheap fix at a TV repair shop?
If you can find a TV repair shop in 2017 then half the battle has been won :D
Depending on where you are in the UK, I might be able to recommend some retro repairer nearby who could help. What town are you in?
Bryce.
Good point! Anywhere in the Midlands or North West would be ok if you know of anywhere?

Really is that so rare in uk?. Here is easy view it and with publicity we repair crt.
The UK and many other European countries have become "Throw-away societies" and there are now almost zero TV repair shops.
@dthrone (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=350): I've fired off a few e-mails to retro repairers I know to see who'd be closest. I'll let you know as soon as they've got back to me.
Bryce.
Brilliant, thanks very much!

Be a bit more specific, you might be near to me!
Stoke, but I'm up and down the M6 regularly. Where are you?

It's terrible isn't it?
The morons in power are always banging on about the local economies, the environment and all that. Yet encouraging people to throw away totally repairable stuff into landfill and buy another one from foreign corporations really does nothing to help anyone except the greedy globalists.
More should be done to make people aware that their equipment is repairable, and usually a lot cheaper than the manufacturers tell them, when done by people like yourself.
Hi, did you check that the brightness knob isn't the reason for your trouble? Does it work fine? They tend to be noisy and sometimes fail.
Yes, the brightness knob seems to be fine luckily.
