Does anyone know who coded MSDOS for CPC?

Bill?

(Ok, I'll be going now)

TYPE the .COM file, it may tell you about the programmer.

it's an AMSDOS program for reading MSDOS disks

Nice find, do you have a DSK? Do you know, in which year it has been published?
I only remember about DosCopy ( https://www.cpcwiki.eu/index.php/DosCopy ) from Face Hugger, which was able to read FAT12 (MS-DOS) discs back in the old days.

Uups. Looked like a CP/M application. Sorry :-)

BonnyDOS also has an extension ROM which is able to read from a  FAT12 floppy.
This application above doesn't seem a real MSDOS environment?

zhulien

no, it's a set of RSXs that lets you read/write to an MSDOS disc

DosCopy and DSK-CPC (the latter would let you duplicate a DSK file on an 720kb DOS formatted disc to a real 3 inch disc) were invaluable tools when I only have a 6128plus with an external 3.5inch B-drive at home and access to NVG and LIP6 on the one PC with Internet access at work ;) Oh those were the good old days!

So for handling FAT12 discs we have...

- "MS-DOS" (year?)
- DosCopy (1993)
- SymbOS (2005)
- BonnyDos (~2007)

Msdos is circa 1993 perhaps a bit earlier. It won't handle 80 track disks though but 40 track double sided work fine

zhulien

Maybe someone wants to disassemble msdos and make it better

That is a different thing, a hardware expansion, which is turning the CPC into a x86 machine.
I am not sure if this was ever produced or only a hoax?

I understand that is a hardware expansion but it is related to the subject and may be of general interest.

Hoax?
Were Vortex known for that behaviour?

It has not gone into production, but a prototype was demonstrated at some point. It also was mentioned several times in German magazines, so no hoax for sure, but sadly only Vaporware :(

Thanks for the info. Yes, I read about this back in the old days, too (do you know which magazine and date?), but I don't remember about the details.
Would be really interesting how it was designed and integrated with the CPC.

"Interface - MSDOS Board For 6128 (Popular Computing Weekly)

IBM PC compatibility for the Amstrad 6128 will be possible by April with the launch of an 16-bit processor MSDOS add-on board for the machine from Screen Micro.

The board will be launched around the same time that Amstrad plans to announce its own PC compatible business system (see Popular Computing Weekly, December 5).

"The MSDOS board will run in conjunction with our own memory expansion board, which will also be launched early next year," said Nigel Sinclair of Screen Micro. "It will mean that anyone with an IBM in the office can run programs on their Amstrad at home.

"So far, all the software we've tested run perfectly on the board, with the exception of Flight Simulator. But it will run Lotus 1-2-3, Dbase II and Symphony."

The MSDOS board, memory expansion board and 6128 combination will compete with Amstrad's own PC compatible. Screen Micro hopes to be able to price the MSDOS processor board at around £299. Its expansion board (which also runs on the CPC 464 and 664) will be offered in configurations of 64K from 64K up to 512K. and includes a resident machine-code monitor, a 32K printer buffer, and an extra 22 Basic sub-set instructions. Prices for the expansion range from £99 (64K expansion) up to £159.95 (512K).

The company also plans a hard disc and controller for the 6128, and a disc drive for £399.

Not much information was available, but it is also mentioned briefly in Schneider Aktiv 1986/02 (and Schneider Magazine AFAIR, but I can't find it right now). As I understood, it was designed for 464/664 with Vortex RAM expansion but when the 6128 arrived, development was initially put on hold and then nothing more was heard of it.

The BBC has a similar x86 addon to run MSDOS - I see no reason why it can't be done on CPC, although on CPC I would see we would need either text modes (for reasonablely fast text ouput) and graphics modes (basicaly doing full 16k copies to video RAM from whereever we might map the x86 into - ROM space?) - but if there was some type of coprocessor like on the BBC, then it could monitor the video RAM and do smart updates.

CPLink already exists with Raspberry Pi connected - it's just everyone including myself are a little busy to code the Linux interface on CPC so that we can do all sorts of things on CPC - like cross development.  I'd like to see z80 emulation on the Pi side where code can be automatically running on CPC if CPLink is not present, but faster on the Pi if the CPLink is present.

zhulien

Anyone want to make a modern PC/CPC interface?  I'd love one!

The ultimate development environment ON THE CPC

GUNHED

Well, that's something different for everybody. Something you desperately want to have is of no interest for some other person and vice versa. Some like menus, windows, this and that - others prefer something completely different.

At least I found it for myself already.
