1984, eh? That's a stretch if I ever saw one, and laced with logical fallacies, too...

So, when someone tries to enforce some common sense rules, it becomes a totalitarian state? It may be useful to point out that even anarchist theory has many, and very strict, rules. There's no  social or political (or whatever, for that matter) system that can work without preset rules. So please don't mention 1984 to me.

Middle ground? And what would be the middle ground here? Unban Leonie for a couple of hours per day so she/he can sow bullshit?

As for the poll: I'm sorry, but it's totally biased and it only presents one side. The point with Leonie is NOT that he/she posts funny/sarcastic/rude posts. The point is that he/she posts totally UNfunny, totally OFF-TOPIC, always sexual, NOT sarcastic (sarcasm requires some mental and wording skills after all) but simply gross and juvenile "jokes" and posts that derail entire threads with the help of some users who are thrilled at the prospect of flirting with a fellow geek "female". How naive can you be, guys? Really...

Just to settle this: this is NOT a freedom of information flow shit. This is about discussions staying on track, about keeping the minimum of self-respect and of a certain level in the forum. If you pretend this has ANYTHING, REMOTELY having to do with hackers ethic then you obviously need to stop taking what it is what it is you're taking and shake your heads. Leonie has caused trouble enough in other fora as well, so it's not a matter of my imagination, and I *will* ban him/her without second thought if the same crap starts again.

PS The first option of the poll is a non-option btw. Nobody said Leonis is posting to anger anybody, but this has absolutely nothing to do with the issue on hand. It could just as well have an option like "the posts annoy me, but the glaciers are slowly melting". This is merely deflecting the real issue...

Summary:

c64 user has to work very hard to get overscan, and nice colours.
So they have much less fat in their brain.

CPC users have overscan and nice colours easily.

Interesting..

What colour are the calories in each?

Just repeating myself, because I'm not going to get drawn into an argument:

unless her comments get personal  with someone, I don't think that no one should take Leonie's comments so seriously, it's just the way she is

Gryzor

Heya mate,

Again you miss the point: It's not a matter of getting insulted or personal. It's a matter of (I'm kind of bored to repeat this... :D ) silly, stupid, sexual, off-topic and thread-derailing posting. You don't have to be insulting to get off-track!

mr_lou

I prefer Leonies posts over those mock-him-because-I-don't-share-his-opinion posts.

Thanks for your opinion. I always hoped someone would say this soon... If I would have written it, I would be watched again ("Kangaroo´s right hand!") now.

Well, maybe these "silly, stupid, sexual" posts have been erased to quick, so at least I'm not able to make my own picture about them.

About off-topic, there is nothing bad in beeing off-topic as long as people like to read the posts (and I had this impression). For being NON-offtopic we have the wiki itself.

Hey guys, relax, stay nice. Let's have a good time here :-)

Ahem... when exactly were you mocked?

But even so, you seem to miss the point that Leonie's posts are detrimental to the entirety of the forum, while your grievance is not.

You really want to go there? Come on man, if you want to discuss this, open another thread and do it, no problem with that...

Um.... no. Who told you that the forum is the playground of the wiki? This is not only a crazy assumption, it's also quite far from the truth. There's an off-topic forum in here, and even THAT is subject to rules. So if people want to post, or enjoy reading, off-topic posts, then they can all do it either in the OT forum or through PMs. And, did you know there are "general discussion" fora out there?

....

I've been online for almost twenty years now (FIDOnet rules...), and on the web since 1994. I've seen one too many fora falling apart because of what is happening right now: oddball members causing friction and others jumping on the bandwagon with their own, just or silly, grievances. This is why I'm not going to tolerate Leonie for long - it's all too easy to poison a community and I don't have the resources* to do it some other way.

And, I'll say it again: if you want to continue flirting with a guy who poses as a girl, by all means do. There are other channels for that. Just leave the forum alone, stop derailing threads with the least mention of flesh, get a grip and stop complaining about the most obvious and basic rules of any given community.

*Also: it's not like I don't read the german forum when I can. And while Leonie has stopped spamming in general, he/she still keeps up this behavior in the German forum (see the latest example about death threats in PMs and such).

Oh my god...

As long as nobody gets an erection, we don´t have a problem.

nurgle

Gryzor, maybe the problem is that we can't judge by deleted postings, because - well they are deleted. I visit the forum maybe once a week and the postings I do read from Leonie are not something I find offensive. However I got the feeling you are talking about the stuff I don't see. So how should I judge?

I do not think it would be wise to post a "hall of shame" of offensive posts as "proof". Thats just rude an silly. However not being transparent seems probelmatic as well. A dilemma. Right?

FWIW: I have been active on usenet for 15-20 years. On usenet you do have some moderated groups, but most are totally free and uncensored. While I do like the spirit of freedom, many groups are toally unreadable today and many users went away, including me. So enforcing the rules does have a benefit and comparing this with 1984 is really not approiate IMHO. Btw, TFM read the book! Much more depth than the film.

Gryzor

Nurgle, you're right in what you say, and I have to admit I didn't think about it: indeed, users may be reacting because they only see the more innocuous postings since I try to do a quick job out of them. My bad...

It could be, indeed, that such posts could be moved to a Garbage bin, as other fora do have. But I, too, think this would be silly and also, it would not give the full picture since out of context posts lose their meaning. It *is* a dilemma and, in my experience, an argument for a more "totalitarian" moderation of the forum. So I guess I'm taking risks here...

I used to frequent usegroups, too, and I loved it, but indeed so many dissolved for various reasons that, in the end, I went completely away.

I loved the book, but I also loved the movie - it's got its own merits. Very powerful.

Bryce

You could always just leave them there until a few other users have "Reported them to the moderator", that way it's more democratic, whether the other users are offended by the post or not? Or does the wiki offer any other methods such as "Thumbs down", "Negative vote" systems that could be used?

Bryce.

Gryzor

It's an interesting proposition, until you realise - what would the cutoff point be? How many would have to complain?

I had given thought to installing a thumbs up/down system, but for various reasons it proves problematic; I've seen it at work before and, before you realise it, people start using it to push up or down persons they do/don't like, and it all goes to hell.

As for leaving them up there for longer: a moderator doing a good job does it before the public notices it. There's no point in tolerating something just to show it to others... And this points out the problem we're having now: that we're experiencing disruption, where none should be. This is what happens with such users, because it's not one or two posts you may dislike or find offensive or off-topic, it's the general attitude...

ukmarkh

Gryzor, were you and Leonie once lovers? It sounds like you're taking the break-up a bit hard  ;)   :D   ;D   :P

Gryzor

Yikes.

Also, I'm getting married next month, so no room for wiggling...
