Amstrad CPC hardware / CPC464 Wireless Controller/Gam...
Last post by dannyh - Yesterday at 15:17
Hi All,

Just wanted to share a little something I put together last night. I'm sure it's been done by others many times before. I've been struggling to find a gamepad for my 464. I unscrewed a few of the aftermarket "Mega Drive" style pads, but they contained chips for the rapid-fire etc., meaning rewiring them internally wasn't as straightforward as I'd hoped. After digging through some boxes, I grabbed an EPS32 and a ULN2803A, and knocked together a very crude bluetooth host/joystick interface. Surprisingly (considering my soldering skills) it worked flawlessly the first time and I can now use my Xbox controller (or any other Bluetooth controller) with my 464!  :)

This weekend I might try to make a PCB/boxed version and see if I can power it from the +5v of the joystick port. Also, because there's plenty of spare buttons not in use on the controller, I'm going to try and implement rapid-fire, macros etc. in the ESP code. Should keep me busy for a few days.

I used the BluePad32 library on the ESP32...

Yes, there's an unofficial group working on third-party cores. I don't know all the details but I know there's at least a BBC micro core.

One thing isn't clear to me - is it open for third party cores? And if so, how does this FPGA compares to the MiSTer's?

@eto yuhuuu!!  That makes sense. The jump from £2M to £2.5M was quite a leap compared to the other stretch goals. There wasn't anything in between, so it did feel like a big gap to close.

It's not meant to replace a real CPC. It's just an alternative. The Next can run multiple 8-bit systems (Spectrum, C64, QL, SAM, ZX81, and hopefully CPC) on one FPGA based machine, with instant loading from SD card, modern video outputs and no aging hardware issues. You can also connect original peripherals like CRTs, joysticks and even load games from cassette if you want.

On top of that, the Next is also its own platform with over 200 games (both originals and remakes like Saboteur Remastered, Head Over Heels Deluxe, and upcoming titles like Target Renegade), even an online multiplayer football game!

Having all of these systems in one place, fully compatible with original hardware and cycle accurate thanks to FPGA, makes it a sort of ultimate "8-bit hub" for retro fans.

oh, they changed it to 6000 backers - not 2.5M - that's just 69 backers missing.

Not bad, only 138K missing (or 400 more Next).

Just for me to understand: What would be the benefit of a Next over a real CPC?

Quote from: orzel on Yesterday at 13:10source all components requiers a lot more time,
The Github repository has links to almost all components on Digikey.

Yes, the comparators need to be bought from big distributors with huge 'minimal' command for free shipping, that's why i offer that. But the whole kit would be a lot harder to do : source all components requiers a lot more time, and also it's more complicated/expensive for shipping. While pcb and comparators can be put in cheap standard letters.

There's not enough interest for this.

Yeah, sadly bots (probably AI scraping) have been swarming for quite some time now...
